FAREWELL TO NWSA CLASS OF 2009!graduation hat
Dear friend,
This academic year has been exhilarating and exciting, while at the same time challenging and uncertain due to the global economic downturn. Through their art, our students have been able to channel many global issues, oftentimes firing up their emotions by utilizing the very creative process that makes them part of New World School of the Arts.

As we prepare to bid farewell to our College and High School classes of 2009, we wish them continued success in their chosen arts field or any other path they chose to follow. It is our desire that they utilize the skills, knowledge and education they acquired at NWSA to help create a more benevolent and healthy world.

Join us at our upcoming events as we congratulate the Class of 2009.
WORLD DAY OF DESIGN ADDRESSES GLOBAL ISSUES
With a cutting-edge poster exhibition, NWSA BFA visual artist Pedro Sarmiento brings to light sensitive issues that have shaped the world in which we live. Common Under Ground, as he has titled his 40-poster exhibition, gives the viewer insight about how the global community perceives the United States, and how our nation perceives the world.

Common Underground
Working with professional graphic designers from across the globe, Sarmiento explores topics such as aids, racism, terrorism, women's rights, sex, dictators and population control, among many others, and illustrates how these have helped shape the development of different cultures. Among the countries that collaborated in this project are Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Philippines, Peru, Russia, Spain and USA.

Spring Dance Concert HSHIGH SCHOOL SPRING CONCERT BOASTS WORLD PREMIER CHOREOGRAPHIES
Staging three World Premiers and two repertoire works from international renowned choreographers, the NWSA Spring Dance Concert, presented by 85 high school students, is dedicated to the memory of Daniel Nagrin. Among the World Premier works is A Green Apple, by Lara Murphy, a piece created for the senior class and inspired by the quote, "The self is simply our work of art, fiction created by the brain in order to make sense of its own disunity." Doubting Thomas, another World Premier, was created for the Junior class by Darshan Singh Bhuller. The choreographer used a painting by Italian Baroque master Caravaggio "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" as his inspiration. A third World Premier, Pulse/Progression choreographed by Ana Gonzalez, explores the relationship between an internal struggle and a release of freedom to move ahead. Also included in the repertoire are North by Northeast, a sinister Ballet Piece inspired by the music from the films of Alfred Hitchcock, created by NWSA's Gerard Ebitz and Martha Graham's classic creation Acts of Light.

NWSA Jazz QuintetNWSA JAZZ QUINTET JOINS THE THELONIOUS MONK INSTITUTE OF JAZZ IN "PEER-TO-PEER" EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz will introduce its "Peer-to-Peer" jazz education program in Pittsburgh public schools May 11-16. Combining performance with information, these "informances" will be presented by five exceptionally gifted high school jazz students from New World School of the Arts along with internationally acclaimed saxophone recording artist Antonio Hart, vocal sensation Lisa Henry, and renowned jazz educator Dr. J.B. Dyas. Each school visit will include a concert for all students followed by jazz workshops for each school's jazz band and choir with the NWSA Jazz quintet playing alongside and sharing ideas with their Pittsburgh counterparts.

The five NWSA students selected to participate in the Pittsburgh tour include bassist Carlos Alabaci, 17; drummer Daniel Higuera, 16; pianist Tony Madruga, 15; tenor saxophonist Cristhian Mora, 17; and alto saxophonist Rane Roatta, 16. "We're really excited about the tour," said Madruga, one of the best jazz pianists for his age in the country. "Learning Antonio [Hart's] music has been challenging to say the least, but it's really helped get us to the next level."

Dade Days Ties 2009VIBRANT ADDITION TO MIAMI-DADE DAYS COLLECTION OF TIES AND SCARVES
Following a tradition of more than twenty years, New World School of the Arts again added a touch of fashion and color to Miami-Dade Days with the newly designed ties and scarves, as members of the Dade delegation, and others constituents wore the stylish accessories during the Spring Florida Legislative session in our nation's capital.

The unique design, created by Colombian-born David Garcia, features a light grey background with bright colored ribbons that intertwine to cleverly state the name of the signature event and the year.  "It's quite an honor for our college students to be selected to participate in the Miami-Dade Days Ties and Scarves Annual Competition. For the winner, it is the opportunity to be recognized for his or her creativity and to have the design mass produced and added to the long list of winning creations, now considered collector's items for many Florida constituents. This year we had eight contestants and the competition was strong. Being selected winner was a thrill for David since it gave him the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee, meet Governor Charlie Crist and experience what our states' legislative process is all about.". David is a senior in the NWSA college program graduating with a BFA degree in graphic design.
