THE WOMEN
 KICKS-OFF THEATER SEASON

Clare Boothe Luce's popular 1936 comedy of manners, The Women, launches New World School of the Arts' 2008-2009 Theater season. With an all-women cast of nineteen students playing thirty nine characters, this timeless, yet relevant production challenges its actors as it exposes the trials and tribulations of high society women of an era gone by. The six-day staging, dedicated to "The Women's Fund", opens with an invitation-only reception this Friday, October 10.

Directed by NWSA theater faculty Gail S. Garrisan, the demanding comedy showcases the talent of all NWSA Junior and Senior college women as well as two of the high school seniors. "It's a wonderful opportunity for all the women to collaborate on a production at the same time," mentioned Garrisan, "but it's also a great challenge, in particular as the students contextualize the subject matter - from researching the historical perspectives to pouring tea and learning how to keep the seams of their stockings straight! Positively a must see this season."

To honor student Virginia McDougal, "Ginny", the NWSA Theater Division has dedicated the complete season to her memory. Sixteen year-old Ginny passed away this summer as a result of a fatal medical event during a scuba test dive in the South Florida Keys. A passionate and loving young lady, Ginny was a junior in the high school Music Theater program.

CONCERT PAYS TRIBUTE TO BELOVED FELLOW STUDENT

NWSA's High School Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble take on the stage as they perform their first concert of the season. With a special dedication to the memory of Ginny McDougal, the Wind Ensemble will interpret James Barnes' "Third Symphony", under the direction of Lee Michael Morrison. Dedicating this powerful Symphony to his children, Barnes explores the dark depths of the human soul within his three movements. The Wind Ensemble will also present  the "Overture to Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna" by Franz Von Suppe.

Presenting a program of pieces spanning nearly a century and a half, the Concert Choir, directed by Albert Clark, will showcase pieces from the Romanticism of Brahms and Stanford to the spirituals of William Dawson and the timeless music of Cole Porter. The concert will also mark the debut of two new vocal jazz ensembles.

EXHIBITION
DELVES INTO GRAPHIC DESIGN

Graphic design, a form of visual communication that through the use of visual elements such as typography and/or images conveys a specific message to an audience, becomes the focus of this exhibition as graphic designers from the college division demonstrate their ability to persuade through their work. Displayed among the works are three posters selected to promote the film "ShootDown," a documentary film based on the Brothers to the Rescue incident of 1996. With a total of thirty-seven pieces, the show also includes three posters designed for Miami-Dade Transit to bring awareness and curtail graffiti, a problem that has become an epidemic throughout the Miami-Dade rail system.  Other featured work includes projects created for the American Institute of Graphic Arts' (AIGA) Get Out the Vote campaign and for Good 50 x 70: The project that helps Social Communication.

HuntHERALD HUNT SHOWCASES NWSA TALENT

The Miami Herald's signature event, The Herald Hunt, kicks off at noon on Sunday, October 26, and, once again, New World School of the Arts students will be there to play a role. This year's event is a hilarious send-up of election politics, as presidential candidate Dave Barry counts down the final days in his 2008 campaign. In past years, Hunters have been wowed by performances by NWSA students, of operatic interludes by the School's singers, to the portrayal of a "Key" player in US colonial history from NWSA's Theater division. Come to this year's Hunt and see the NWSA students as they perform and confound in this unique urban adventure.

Lee MichaelRENOWNED THEATER DIRECTOR LECTURES AT NWSA

Producer, director and published author, Lee Michael Cohn recently conducted a series of acting workshops for New World School of the Arts high school and college students. The one-week intensive during the first week of September 2008, aimed to equip students with various simple tools to help them problem-solve as actors. "The students were a pleasure to work with," recalled Cohn - "their enthusiasm was palpable as they interacted with each other and immediately put to use some of the very concepts I was teaching."

Lee Michael Cohn has been a staple at NWSA for the past fifteen years during which time he has earned the respect of students and faculty. Co-author of the popular 1986 reference book A Practical Handbook for the Actor, Cohn describes his methods and philosophies of the theater along with five other working actors, all of whom worked with playwright David Mamet at the Goodman Theater in Chicago. NWSA has utilized this book throughout the years as the foundation tool for studying acting technique and to help students focus as they prepare for a career in the performing arts. With over 225,000 copies sold, the book has become required reading for hundreds of theater programs throughout the nation.
