"STAIRWAY TO THE ARTS" AT THE SAGAMORE HOTEL |
 |
Six college graduates from the visual arts
class of 2008 have come together to infuse their
unique energy in a collaborative work of art
dubbed "The Stairwell Project." Located at the
Sagamore Hotel in Miami Beach, the artwork will be a
flowing rendition that will span throughout a six-story
stairwell located off "The Art Hotel's" main gallery.
After meeting certain criteria, the students were
selected to participate by NWSA Dean of Visual
Arts, Maggy Cuesta. "Their personal artistic
expression in transforming a separate floor of the
stairwell will ultimately blend each of their individual
works into one harmonious piece of art."
"The Stairwell Project" is the first in the continuing
series of creating works within the Sagamore Hotel's
stairwells. Cricket Taplin, curator of The Sagamore
Collection, has invited Chris Ingalls, Miami-based art
adviser, consultant, and appraiser, to co-curate this
project with her. The project is part of the Sagamore's
ongoing invitation to select artists to create original
works on the hotel grounds, and is a new addition to
The Sagamore Collection. These select students will
have the honor of having their work shown in the
company of such monumental talents as Yoko Ono,
Spencer Tunick, Massimo Vitali and Roxy Paine, all of
whom have created original works at the Sagamore
and have works presently exhibited in major
museums as well as recognized public and private
collections throughout the world.

HEARTFELT FAREWELL TO GINNY MCDOUGAL |
|
Virginia Anne McDougal [April 4, 1992 - July 27, 2008]
It was a solemn week at NWSA, as it prepared to bid
farewell to one of its beloved students. Sixteen year-
old Ginny McDougal passed away Sunday, July 27,
2008 as a result of a fatal medical event during a
Scuba test dive in the South Florida Keys. A
passionate and loving young lady, Ginny was a junior
in the high school Music Theater program, where she
thrived in dancing, singing and acting. In addition, she
was actively involved in Girl Scouts and the Youth
Group of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She is
survived by her parents, two sisters, [both alums of
NWSA], and grandparents.
"We are fortunate to have known Ginny. Her energy
and enthusiasm were contagious and will continue to
inspire," stated Mercedes Quiroga, Provost at
NWSA, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the
McDougal family, who for many years has been part of
New World School of the Arts."
Ginny's memory will forever remain at NWSA, as her
parents have generously established the "Ginny
McDougal Memorial Fund", in their daughter's name.
During the memorial service held on Thursday in
Coral Gables, they requested that in lieu of flowers, all
donations be sent to New World School of the Arts/
MDC Foundation.
