This is also the time when we welcome new support in the form of board directors and corporate partners. Please join us in thanking our supporters for sharing both time and finances. They are truly the backbone of our organization.
The 2010-11 year holds great potential for strengthening ties between current participants, alumni, funding partners and our community at large. As you might expect, we have some exciting plans up our sleeves!
Thank you for being a part of Advancing Leadership,

New Corporate Partners Are Making Good Things Happen
| Advancing Leadership and Advancing Leadership Youth are proud to welcome two new Premier Sponsors to our family of funding partners: Starbucks Foundation and Umpqua Bank.
| Thanks Starbucks Foundation! |
Starbucks is contributing both financially and with volunteer support. In addition to a $10,000 grant for our Advancing Leadership Youth program, Starbuck's Project Manager for Global Development John Carnahan has joined the AL Board of Directors, and plans to bring in other Starbuck's staff to help our youth participants with their team project.
Umpqua Bank has stepped up with a $2,500 grant, as well as in-kind support in the form of facilities, volunteers and a few visits from the Umpqua ice cream truck! Umpqua's own Rhonda Brown, AL '02 and Janice Siebenaler, AL '10 are AL graduates, and Marty Markey (the lucky ice cream truck driver) is participating in the current class. | Welcome Umpqua Bank! | Premier Sponsors of our programs have many opportunities to get personally involved, including visiting on class days, presenting information about their company or organization to our participants, joining us for volunteer work and sending one of their own employees through the AL adult program!
Join us in thanking our new corporate partners for their vital support. For more info on supporting AL and ALY, either as a business/organization or as an individual, visit our "Program Support" page on our website.

Modeling the Way: ALY Grads Leap into Leadership
| Three recent grads from ALY '10 aren't wasting any time putting their leadership training to work. Brett Evans is the new ASB President and Isaac Wani is Junior Class Vice President at Federal Way High School. Joe Miller was elected President of the Math, Science, Health and Fitness Academy at Todd Beamer High School.
None of these three new officers had ever run for a position in his school's student government before. What prompted each of them to pursue such a big challenge? | Joe on Diversity Day |
Joe Miller, ALY '10: " Before ALY I had though about running, but had never totally committed," admits Joe. "Through my junior year in ALY, I knew that it was my responsibility to give back to my school and to those who had taught me in ALY. I knew that it would be a disservice to myself, my peers, and to those amazing speakers and instructors in ALY if I did not somehow use the skills I was taught." He also sites all the leaders he sees in his own life, including parents, other adults and peers, as inspiration. " They all exemplified leadership characteristics and I desired to be like them. They were always involved in programs and organizations and would always help anyone in need." | Issac on Govt. Day |
Issac Wani, ALY '10: Issac's run for office came just after he became a U.S. citizen. One of his favorite things about his ALY year was the comprehensive introduction to all aspects of the Federal Way community. "We went all over town, to all these different places. It helped me understand how things worked." Issac was already active in his school's JROTC program, but student government was a new experience for him. "ALY was really my main motivation for running," he told us. " I learned so much about how the school district works. That was very helpful for me, and I wanted to get involved with it."
| Brett on Quality of Life Day |
Brett Evans, ALY '10: Brett got the extra boost of confidence he needed from the support of his peers. "This was my first time ever running for any sort of office in student government . . . my classmates were very supportive and enthusiastic about the idea of me running." He also believes that his position is a great way to use the skills he developed in ALY. "What I learned in ALY gave me the confidence that I could do the job with excellence . . . I will never forget some of the words (ALY presenters) spoke, and I often hear them running in my mind when leading different aspects of my school ASB. These reminders keep me on the right track. I realize how impacting words can be and how leadership has a far reaching effect."
Way to get in there and model servant leadership at your schools, guys!

Challenging the Process: Alums Share Their Vision
| The AL staff doesn't just teach The Leadership Challenge to our participants; we follow it in our own work every day! One way we ensure that our programs are constantly improving is to bring in new voices to 'challenge the process'. Many of these new voices belong to our alumni. Here are some of the people who helped us make AL & ALY better in 2010:
Amy Johnson, AL '08: ALY Facilitator
Amy, personal and parent coach, MSW, and owner of Diligent Joy has over 20 years of experience working with children and youth. We asked her to help out with some sections of ALY '09, and were so impressed, we offered her a job! Now Amy is the ALY leadership facilitator and a priceless asset to that program.
Pete Dronzek, AL '09, Debra Feammelli, AL '09, Thomas Fichtner, AL '08, Addy Tseng, AL '10: Tech Advisory Committee
With a website in need of updating, electronic communication in need of fine tuning, and the world of social networking laying wide open before us, it was time to bring in some talented techies with a passion for computers, communication and of course, Advancing Leadership!
Pete, IT application engineer for FWPS, Debra, marketing communications specialist, Thomas, acting IT Supervisor for the City of Federal Way and Addy, consultant and social networking aficionado, evaluated what we were using and recommended content and format changes, shared technical and legal considerations, and brainstormed ways to better utilize the web to connect the AL network. Their input has already been put to use, and they remain 'on call' to consult on future ideas.
Steve Hopf, AL '09: Videographer
We first met Steve when he recorded our AL alumni gathering in 2008. By fall, he was enrolled in the program himself. After seeing his production skills in the slide show he created for the AL '09 graduation, we've asked for his invaluable assistance as a videographer, producer and consultant. Look for samples of his work on our youth and adult pages, where we've linked the graduation slide shows for ALY and AL '10.
Thanks to these outstanding alumni and all of the many volunteers who make our programs better all the time!

Advancing Leadership Celebrates Our First Wedding |
| Dan & Janelle, AL Couple |
Our programs are designed to bring people together, help them make new connections and facilitate new partnerships. We've seen countless examples of of great AL networking over the years, but on 1/1/11, AL will celebrate a first for us: the marriage of two of our alumni Dan Bogart, and Janelle Erickson, both AL '08 graduates!
Dan and Janelle met during the AL program in 2007-8. Their interactions together as classmates during their AL days led to a deepening friendship, and the rest is history!
Everyone at Advancing Leadership extends our congratulations and best wishes to Dan and Janelle!
