From one mom to another.... -- submitted by Holly A.
I decided last week to transition my 2 year 9 month old son from his crib to a bed...not sure what my rush was since the notion of giving up "Cribby" made him cry. I dreaded the dance of returning him to bed countless times before one of us collapsed from exhaustion. And if he was anything like my older son, I'd find him at 3:30 am, perched on the window sill, behind the drape, "admiring the moon". The transition from crib to bed is not an easy rite of passage for toddler or parents but when something comes along that smoothes the bumps, a mother wants to sing its name from the rooftops.
My husband, Mr. All-things-organic-and-sustainable, recently read about a Danish company called Flexa that manufactures kids' furniture from pine grown in the company's own sustainable forests in Northern Europe. Each time they cut down a tree, they plant another. They use environmentally friendly UV lacquer, no formaldehyde or toxic coloring. Better still, all waste from the production of Flexa furniture is compressed into fuel pellets used to heat factories and homes in Scandanavia. Mr. Tree Hugger liked this a lot.
Start with a basic bed, twin or full size, with head and footboard. Add a full back rail and a ¾ front rail for those new to beds, and you've got what we called "a big boy crib". It's low to the ground and totally cozy...a perfect nest but with enough room for big brother sleepovers. You can also buy a trundle or drawers to go underneath. And the best part? Believe it or not...putting it together! Yes, all the products require assembly but my 5 and almost 3 year old did just about every step themselves with some careful direction.
True to the name Flexa, when your child's needs change, this same bed can be converted to a loft with dresser or a desk underneath, bunk beds (with optional slide for extra speedy decent), princess beds, castle beds...the options seem endless. So now we're on to the next milestone...I wish Flexa made potties.
