Happy Halloween to all of your little ghosts, goblins,
football players or ballerinas!

Enjoy your adorable dress up kings and queens this year, take lots of pictures before the outfit slowly dribbles off as they walk down the street, just remember these safety tips to be sure that everyone has the utmost fun in the safest environment:

*  Make sure your child can SEE  -- eye holes should be large and allow for good vision forward as well as peripheral vision -- especially if they are crossing streets!

*  Be aware of jack-o-lanterns with real candles, especially if you child's costume has lots of 'floating' pieces

*  For children, knives with slick pumpkin juice on them are a NO.  If your child wants to participate, have them draw the face with a sharpie and you can then cut it out for them

*  Children should have reflective parts to their outfits or carry a flashlight so that they can be seen at all times

*  Do not have children eat treats that are not wrapped or if the wrapper looks tampered with

*  Discuss a "candy eating strategy" BEFORE you go out -- agree on a set amount of candy they can have and a plan for candy eating after the night itself -- sounds insane, but it might save you a late night argument you're sure to lose!

*  Remind children not to wander off without you, never to get into a car, or enter the home of a person they do not know, NO MATTER WHAT!  Keep children near-by -- don't get distracted by a conversation and let them get lost in the crowd!

Have fun!

*  If you're wondering what to do with all of that leftover candy...try out Westchester Smile Design's Cash For Candy Program.  From November 2nd through November 6th children are encouraged to bring in their Halloween candy to Westchester Smile Design at 39 Smith Ave, Mt. Kisco.  For every pound of candy, children will be awarded $5 and a charitable donation will also be made to the local Boys and Girls Clubs of Westchester in Mt. Kisco.  Simply bring your kids in between the hours of 9am and 6pm to drop off their candy and they'll get a $5 reward!

dogs

And while you're in the mood for a little dress up....

What do gelato and dogs in festive garb have in common? They're both parts of an outrageously fun contest / fundraiser that Via Vanti! Restaurant is sponsoring for the benefit of Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights.

Dog owners are challenged to "unleash their imagination" by coming up with a flavor name of gelato suggested by the appearance and personality of their canine friend when dressed in a party hat or other fun doggie attire. Contest entrants submit their dog's "flavor name", a photograph of their dog in costume, and a $20 entry donation to:
 www.dogsinpartyhats.com
.

Twelve winners will each receive:  *  The high honor of having a gelato Flavor-of-the-Month created by Via Vanti! in the spirit of their entry  *  A professional photographic portrait of their dog in costume, with a framed copy enshrined for a year on a doggie "Wall of Fame" at Via Vanti!  *
A festive "party dog gift pack" for each winning canine *  A "Year of Gelato" gift card good for a pint of gelato at Via Vanti!

The contest period ends on November 30, 2009 -- but there's no time like the present. If you're thinking of dressing up your dog for Halloween, that could be the perfect inspiration for your entry!  Visit www.dogsinpartyhats.com

Guiding Eyes for the Blind was founded in 1954 to enrich the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely, thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and expanded horizons of opportunity. Since that time, Guiding Eyes has become one of the foremost guide dog schools in the world, graduating more than 7,000 guide dog teams. It provides superbly bred Guiding Eyes dogs, professional training and follow-up support services to students at no cost to them, and depends on contributions to fulfill its mission. Visit www.guidingeyes.org.

NWH Gift Club

Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) Auxiliary Special Occasion Club

Give your child the opportunity to be thoughtful, thankful and generous, while also teaching the importance of giving back to your community!

The Auxiliary of Northern Westchester Hospital invites families to think of the Special Occasion Club while planning birthdays, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, baptisms, confirmations, graduations, holidays, or any other event where children receive gifts.

As members of the Club, the children request donations to the Hospital in lieu of (or in addition to) gifts.  Single donations in honor of special occasions make thoughtful and appreciated gifts, too.  Participation is a wonderful way the important values of being thoughtful, thankful, and generous can be experienced and shared. The Special Occasion Club helps to develop and instill the joy and responsibility of volunteerism and contributing to our community.

The funds raised will support the Hospitals Planetree "Patient Centered Care" outreach such as Pet Therapy, Massage & Aroma Therapy and other modalities to provide comfort, caring and distraction to children and adults while in the Emergency Department or staying at the Hospital.

In addition to the reward of "Giving a gift that gives more" all participating children and their parents are invited to an annual Special Occasion Club Party held each January in the Hospital. Attendees will learn about Planetree, have a special VIP tour of the hospital and enjoy other fun activities.

To participate in the Northern Westchester Hospital Special Occasion Club or for more information, contact Annette Serrano at the NWH Foundation at 914.242.8352 or aserrano@nwhc.net.  ALL Ages Welcome!

Donations can also be made directly through the NWH Gift Tool at www.NWHC.net, Donate Now, specify Special Occasion Club.
