Dan Gutman kicks off Foundations of Education Series at Rippowam Cisqua

Rippowam Cisqua School is pleased to announce the lineup for the 2009-10 Foundations of Education Series, a series of informative conversations with experts in the field of education and parenting.  These conversations are designed to offer parents insights and strategies for raising successful, lifelong learners.  The lectures are free and open to the public and are held at Rippowam Cisqua School in Mount Kisco.

The series kicks off at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 8th with children's author Dan Gutman.  Mr. Gutman, the author of the popular My Weird School series, Honus & Me, The Kid Who Ran For President, The Million Dollar Shot, and many others, will take students through a lively presentation that features all the steps of the publishing process - the original idea, research, outline, writing, re-writing, editing, cover design, and finally, the exciting arrival of the finished book.  Mr. Gutman has been known to share with kids his original manuscripts, early cover designs, and even a few of the many rejection letters he has received from publishers over the years.

"I hated to read when I was a kid," Gutman noted recently, "but around the time I was ten years old, I became a big sports fan.  I wanted to know everything about sports.  Reading baseball cards, magazines, and biographies of my favorite athletes turned me into a reader.  My mother was astonished that I grew up and became a professional writer."  As Dan notes, "When kids get the chance to meet the author of a book they've read, a special connection is made. They are routinely energized, inspired, touched, and have a new appreciation for reading."

Upcoming Foundations of Education lectures will feature "Harnessing the Power of Critical Thinking" with Bena Kallick, PhD (11/12 - 10am); "The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness" with Ned Hallowell, MD (12/10 - 10:00am); "Bringing Up Confident Girls" with Dan Kindlon, PhD (2/11 - 10am), and "Raising Boys in the Current Environment" with Peg Tyre (4/8 - 7:00pm).

Rippowam Cisqua School is a co-educational PreKindergarten through Grade 9 independent country day school located in Bedford and Mount Kisco.  For more information contact Susie Danziger at susie_danziger@rcsny.org or (914) 244-1292 or visit www.rcsny.org.

6th Annual Hudson Valley Walk for PKD
Saturday, September 26, 2009

2009 Walk for PKD
Saturday, September 26th, 2009.  Registration 9am, Walk 10am
Bedford Hills Memorial Park, Haines Road, Bedford Hills, NY

Join us with your family to increase awareness of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and raise funds for PKD research.  PKD is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases - affecting 12.5 million people worldwide and 1600 in Westchester County alone.  It causes cysts to form in the kidneys, interfering with the kidney's ability to filter toxins out of the blood, resulting in eventual kidney failure.  Dialysis and transplantation are the only treatments.  There is no cure for PKD.

The Walk for PKD will help raise funds for medical research aimed at finding a treatment and cure for PKD.  The nationwide effort is expected to raise more than $4.5 million.  A cure for PKD would save lives, free up thousands of spots on the kidney transplant waiting list, and save billions of US tax dollars annually in dialysis-related expenses.  Research has identified the genes causing PKD and clinical trials of potential treatments are underway...now is the time to bring attention and funding to PKD research!

For more information on PKD, visit the PKD Foundation web site at www.pkdcure.org, for information about the Hudson Valley Walk click here.

The Greenwich Land Trust Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Go Wild! @ Night & Go Wild!
Save the Date! October 3 & 4

The Greenwich Land Trust will mark the 10th Anniversary of Go Wild! with a weekend of events this fall.  On Saturday evening, October 3, adults are invited to Go Wild @ Night, a "wildly chic" evening of dinner and dancing under the stars at the Greenwich Polo Club.  On Sunday afternoon, October 4, the entire family is invited to an extra special 10th anniversary Go Wild! field day.

New this year, Go Wild @ Night is sure to delight with a delicious buffet by Abigail Kirsch, dancing to "Double Down", a Southern Rock band and limited evening rides in the signature Go Wild! hot air balloons.  There will be many "wild" surprises including sleight-of-hand entertainers, star gazing with Rick Bria, and a hay maze to the martini bar.

Go Wild! the GLT's annual family field day is regarded as one of the best family events in Greenwich. All generations enjoy the great outdoors while watching children scale the climbing wall, cuddle animals in the petting zoo, take a ride on the mechanical bull and navigate the giant obstacle course. Of course, colorful hot air balloons will offer a bird's eye view of the spectacular event.

The Greenwich Land Trust, founded in 1976 as a nonprofit conservation organization, is dedicated to preserving land permanently in its natural state for the benefit of this and future generations.  Land conservation and stewardship protect Greenwich's air and water quality, provide corridors for wildlife and offer visual relief in densely populated areas.  The GLT currently preserves more than 726 acres of land in the Greenwich area including woodlands, meadows, orchards, and salt marshes. Visit www.gltrust.org or call 203-629-2151 to purchase tickets.
