As you begin your Back to School Shopping for the kids, and remember that special feeling of new books, adorable first day clothes, and fun new pencils or pens, consider joining in on one of the programs below that ask you to think about also helping families who may not be able to afford those new school items. | |
Back-to-School Clothes for Kids provides new school clothing to needy children in Westchester and the Bronx with the help of donations from local corporations, their employees, clubs, individuals and schools. The new clothing these kids receive helps them feel confident for the first day of school, but the benefits go further. Getting new clothes for school sends a message to a child that school is important and that he or she is important. For Younger ChildrenSponsors are given a profile of a child (ages 5-12) and, with the help of family, friends or co-workers, they raise funds and purchase clothing. The profile is compiled by a social worker and includes the child's first name, sex, and age, as well as style and color preferences. Each child receives underwear, socks, three sets of apparel, and sneakers or a coat, as well as a backpack and school supplies. The estimated cost for one child is $200.
For Teenagers With money raised through donations, Back-to-School Clothes for Kids has shopping nights for teens at the Galleria in White Plains and the Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown. Some of these teens have never had a chance to shop for their own new clothes! The "Shopping With a Teen" or "SWAT" Nights give teens an opportunity to get exactly what they want- with the right look and the right fit. Donations and volunteers are welcome!
Donations can be sent to: Back-to-School Clothes for Kids, PO Box 304, White Plains, NY 10605. |

Back to School Shopping for Family Services of Westchester
Every fall we gather school supplies and backpacks for the families we serve at Family Services of Westchester through Head Start, Latino Connections and programs that support families with difficult and challenging issues. As you prepare your children for back to school with trips to purchase school clothes, backpacks and supplies, ask them to assist you in selecting some items for children whose families can not afford to provide them.
Family Services of Westchester works with hundreds of families who need help in getting their children off to school with the tools we all use- pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, glue, rulers, markers, crayons and backpacks.
With headquarters in Port Chester, Family Services has seven additional Family Center locations in key regions of the County: Mount Kisco; Tarrytown; Peekskill; Mount Vernon; Yonkers; White Plains and Pelham. For more information or to drop off donations, contact Gerry Goldberg at ggoldberg@fsw.org. For information about Family Services of Westchester, visit www.fsw.org. |
