Back to School Books

August has arrived, and with it the back to school jitters. Scores of students will head off to school for the first time next month, which often produces heightened anxiety. Books are a wonderful way to help children cope with the feelings they may experience.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn describes the separation anxiety many children have when starting school. Chester, a raccoon, does not want to go to school; he wants to stay home with mom and play with his toys. His mother describes all the activities he will do at school (night school, since he is a raccoon!) and tells him about the kissing hand, a secret kiss that will leave him feeling close to mom until they reunite.

Some first timers worry less about separation and more about whether their teacher will be kind, if they will get lost, and the bus ride. In Kindergarten Rocks!  by Katie Davis, Dexter Dugan has no fears about starting school. His stuffed dog, Rufus, however, is an "eensy teensy beensy bit scared." Fortunately, for Dexter and Rufus, big sister Jessie lends her expertise about how terrific kindergarten will be. Dexter's first day is an adventure, but a success, and he can't wait to return.

In Countdown to Kindergarten written by Allison McGhee and illustrated by Harry Bliss, a girl is nervous that with Kindergarten only ten days away, she still can't tie her shoes, and she has heard that the teachers won't help. She counts down each day and attempts to master her laces, or at least lose her shoes!  When the big day finally arrives she is relieved because most of her classmates can't tie, but the teachers are more than happy to assist.

Each of these books, with colorful characters, humor and sentiment, will help our youngest pupils as they anticipate this milestone in their lives.
There are also great picture books for older kids (6-9) who want to get back in the groove of school, too.

Miss NelsonMiss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard and James Marshall is the story of a class that misbehaves so much until one day when their teacher simply does not show up. The substitute, Miss Viola Swamp, is dreadful and the students go on a search to find out what happened to their beloved Miss Nelson. The children never do crack the case, but the reader does, and everyone is happy-and better behaved- when Miss Nelson finally returns.

Tillie, in It's a Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech and Harry Bliss, has the difficult task of convincing her over zealous principal, Mr. Keene, that there are other worthwhile pursuits in life besides attending school. Mr. Keene is very enthusiastic about his "fine, fine school," and decides that school should be in session on weekends and holidays. His students and teachers do not share his sentiments, however, and Tillie decides to take action when she realizes there will be no more time to climb trees or teach her brother to skip.

For anyone who has ever wondered what their teacher does after school hours, My Teacher's Secret Life written by Stephen Krensky and illustrated by JoAnn Adinolfi is a fun read. A boy claims to know everything about his new teacher, Mrs. Quirk. In particular, he knows what Mrs.Quirk and the other teachers do when the students leave school. He is convinced that they live at school, and is quite surprised when he sees his teacher at the supermarket filling her grocery cart. He cannot understand why she would need to food shop, when the cafeteria staff prepares all her meals from lunchtime leftovers.

These books are lighthearted and humorous and while they each have a message about school life, they are sure to get children laughing and back in the mood for school!
