Read Your "Art" Out This Summer with the Westchester Library System

The Westchester Library System (WLS) is opening the books on its annual Summer Reading Program, an opportunity for children to experience the joy of books and reading in each of the county's 38 libraries. Specially designed programming compliments this year's themes, Be Creative @ Your Library for children and Express Yourself @ Your Library for teens, with a variety of special programs and events.

Libraries throughout the county will kick off the 2009 Summer Reading Program by celebrating the arts and encouraging kids to tap into their creativity with special programs and resources to bring out the inner artist, performer, writer, musician, or poet. Group programs throughout the summer allow children to step into the world of books through events like song and dance programs, crafts sessions, and science and nature projects. More traditional library programs encourage participants to hear, read, or tell stories through storytelling programs, pajama story times, and weekend programs.

Youth services librarians will be available one-on-one to help guide participants to books that will interest them and share their favorite titles with eager summer readers. Adding to the joyous events are incentives, prizes, and certificates to inspire children and teens to include reading in their summer activities.

For additional information on the 2009 Summer Reading Program, including a calendar of events and programs, visit the WLS website at www.westchesterlibraries.org or your local library.  To view a list of Westchester County Libraries, click here.

lice patrol logoTips to Avoid Head Lice For the Summer!

If you are about to pack your kids off to camp or take off for a little vacation as a family, consider the following tips from The Lice Patrol -- preventative measures that might just save your summer!

*  Wear Organic Fiji Coconut/Lavender Oil lice repellent in your hair daily.
*  Wash hair 2 -3 times a week with Lice R Gone shampoo.
*  In the shower, comb conditioner through your hair with the metal Licemeister comb, at least every other day.
*  Keep your hair pulled back in a ponytail or braids.
*  Don't share hair care items such as brushes, combs, clips, headbands, etc.
*  Try to avoid laying your head on others people's beds or towels.
*  Try to limit the hugging of your friends.
*  Do not re-wear clothes.  Bring enough clothes to sleepaway camp to last until wash day.
*  Bring a lint roller.  Great to use on your pillow and bedding.

If you have no idea where to purchase the above items, purchase a Lice Prevention Kit directly from The Lice Patrol (10% off for EssentialMom.com Members).
