Happy Father's Day!
This weekend we honor the age-old tradition of Father's Day. Put a steak on the grill, pass him a few beers, and hand over a new tie and some socks.
Or maybe it's more than that...
I have to admit, the new age of Dad-ism is actually something real to honor. When I consider the men of my parents' and grandparents' generations and how little they did to help with the kids and around the house (don't get me wrong, I love my dad, but my mom swears he never changed a diaper...ever), I realize how MUCH my husband does. He treks happily to kids' events, sits through every baseball game and recital, changed diapers like a champ, handles making lunches every morning, dresses them, bathes them, and spends lots of time with our kids hiking, camping, playing and getting good and dirty.
The days of the 5 o'clock martini and a pat on the head for the kids as they're trotted off to bed by their mother are gone. Being a parent in this day and age is as much about balance for Dads as it is for Moms. It's sloppy, it's full time, and it's not easy for either side to keep up.
So this weekend, treat the Dad in your life well -- he might even deserve it.
