Once upon a time there was a little girl (we'll call her Gretchen) who grew up in the suburbs of Pennsylvania with her parents and siblings. They lived in comfort, attended school, and enjoyed suburban pursuits.
Except in the summers. In the summers, their mother packed them all into the family station wagon and headed on their yearly sojourn to Vermont where her college roommate resided with her four gorgeous, strapping boys on a small dairy farm in the Northeast Kingdom.
This little girl watched with fascination as these boys drove tractors, heaved large hay bales, milked cows, grew vegetables and worked hard through the summer. She held in awe the work that they did and the products that they created with their very own hands. The boys and girl grew up, and as they did, the woman felt a great respect for the men as she watched them evolve into competent farmers and business men, holding steady to their love of the land and their work.
The woman received an email this week and was bursting with a pride she just had to share -- the products created out of her friends' hard work are now being featured in her neighborhood Whole Foods for all of her suburban friends to enjoy!
The woman will pack her kids up again this summer as she does each summer, to visit that same farm, hoping to teach her children the values of hard work and the satisfaction of making something great that matters to people's health, to the environment, and because, well, it tastes good!
