Today, as I packed our copious bags, including one whole bag for our brand new puppy, wielded them into the car, cajoled my kids to pay attention long enough to get their 'special things' together, packed a dinner for in the car, and grumped at my husband, I thought to myself...is it all really worth it? I'm crazy and cranky and short with everyone, why are we doing this??!!!!
Well, because life is short and it's messy, and it's insane, but I chose this life and most days I love it.
We travel because I treasure watching my kids play with their cousins, hug their grandparents, and run around with the dumb dog we just turned our life upside down for. I even love the way they cry when we have to leave our family in another state, when they complain about living far away, and when they obsess for weeks about which things they will do at grandma's when they get there.
They love family-- they live for funny uncles and silly cousins, for grandpa and his 'projects', for grandma and her books. So, it's worth the mess and it's worth the chaos....I just have to remind myself again and again until I get home with a smile full of memories!
So as you face your own family today, just try and BREATHE. Watch the memories as they happen if you can, if not you might miss something worth a giggle or even a tear.
