Westchester Land Trust "Quest"

wltJoin Westchester Land Trust and the Lewisboro Land Trust at Our First "Quest," this Sunday, November 2nd, at the Frederick P. Rose Preserve, in Cross River.

In an effort the encourage visits to our preserves, we are unveiling our new "quest" for the Frederick P. Rose Preserve that promises to be fun and educational for all ages.

Questing is a combination treasure hunt-education game that lets you learn about the natural and human history of a place while exploring the countryside.  We've chosen a tract of land that used to be a farm and is now a nature preserve -- the 110-acre Frederick P. Rose Preserve, on Route 121 in Cross River. Join us anytime from noon til 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, at the entrance to the preserve, across from Todd Road.

Anybody can participate!  At the preserve, you can pick up a guide to the Quest (or online at westchesterlandtrust.org). It will lead you to 15 places worth knowing about -- old farm roads and foundations, stone walls, fences, the remains of a chestnut tree killed by the blight.

At each stop there will be a box with a letter of the alphabet. Jot the letter down on your guide.  Here, for example, is the description of one of the stops on the Quest:

"Look on the left for the tree that has a VERY large base and three smaller shoots (called "leaders") growing out of it. This is evidence of logging. When the tree is cut down and the base remains, the tree sprouts two or three new shoots. The base of this tree is probably 200 years old and was here when the land was a farm.  When you find this tree, write down the letter you see there in the box below corresponding to #11."

When you complete the Quest, the letters will spell a sentence that sums up all the information from each stop.  The Quest takes under an hour. Children will look at elements of the landscape that they might otherwise overlook, and will see how they cohere to tell a story, in the case about the history of the land.

WLT developed the Rose Preserve Quest in partnership with the Lewisboro Land Trust and with Beth Herr, the conservation program administrator for the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.

At the age of two and a half, my son Anthony was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome.  Nephrotic Syndrome is a disease that attacks the kidneys.  There is no known cause of this disease and no cure.  My family and I are looking to change that.  This is why we have teamed up with the NephCure Foundation to help organize a Step Forward fundraising walk in Westchester.

The NephCure Foundation was established as a non-profit organization in 1999 by parents of children dealing with Nephrotic Syndrome and FSGS.  NephCure is the only organization solely committed to seeking a cause and a cure for these conditions.  At this time we are planning a walk at FDR Park in Yorktown, NY on Sunday, November 2nd, at 10 am.  If you can make it we would love to see you there!

Help for Haiti

The S.H.A.R.E. Joy Foundation is collecting donations for a community center in the countryside of Haiti.  Bonite Affriany, a trained nurse who many years ago moved to Haiti and opened a mission that currently feeds 175 children one meal a day is seeking help in providing for her families. Her mission is to give these children food, books, clothes and an education.

Every year she travels to the United States to buy a toy for each of the children. As most of you know, Haiti is an impoverished country and with the recent Hurricanes, the situation for her families has become desperate. She can no longer afford the luxury of a single toy for each child. With that said we are organizing a toy drive for her. The children are ages 2-15.  The Foundation is seeking NEW or very GENTLY used toys for these children.  Remember, this is their ONE gift this Christmas, make it a great one!

If you can wrap the gift and put an approximate age and sex on the outside that would be great, if not we still would be grateful. We are hoping to receive all donations by Friday 11/7. Our goal is to get 175 toys!

For more information on the toy drive or to schedule a drop-off, please email Nicole at protomastro@optonline.net
