Guitar Guy
I have a son who is completely musically obsessed and has been since, well, since he was born. He has been raised on James Taylor live concerts instead of Barney videos, moved along to Sade, then Dave Mathews, on to John Mayer, and Bruce Springstein. His current favorites are Pete Yorn and the ever inappopriate AC/DC.
He's an interesting guy to say the least, and I think he will be a fabulous 15 year old one day soon...you know, the kid who joins the band, only talks about music, and bores those around him to tears talking about riffs and speaker levels. At least we don't have to worry about him getting girlfriends too early.
Anyway, my son's issues aside, we have discovered some great finds for the musically obsessed youngster that I want to share with any fellow sufferers.
Music Classes:
Amadeus ConservatoryWith sites in Chappaqua, Bedford, and Rye, Amadeus is the place to find a great instructor. They seem to have cornered the market on finding young, college and grad school instructors to teach kids-- you know the cool kind with the long hair and fascinatingly hip clothes...but who still care about music, kids, and teaching. Amadeus offers lessons in a variety of instruments and have classes and lessons that reach all ages, including the 2-5 year old crowd in their early education programs. The kids actually have recitals throughout the year that you can attend as well-- imagine the video for blackmail purposes later. Events: KMA Shades of Jazz
Our favorite musical events of the year are coming up soon and everyone should know about them. The Katonah Museum of Art offers a fantastic jazz series every summer: Shades of Jazz. The museum opens its doors to jazz lovers, families, and evening picnickers, summer Wednesdays: June 11th, July 16th, and August 6th, at 6:30pm.
"An established KMA signature event, Shades of Jazz returns for its third year to the Museum's Sculpture Garden to create summer evening memories for all ages. Curated by legendary guitarist John Scofield, the three-part series begins June 11th and features the most recent sensations in the international jazz scene. Shades of Jazz is sponsored by the Blue Note jazz club and Willy Nick's Restaurant & Bar. The event includes complimentary wine and beer; attendees traditionally bring picnic dinners, lawn chairs and blankets. All Shades of Jazz performances take place on Wednesdays, beginning at 6:30pm. $10 members, $20 non-members.
