Happy Mother's Day to all of my favorite ladies!
My sister in law just had her first child last week and we have all been filled with the magic of the newborn baby-- I am shocked to find myself still spellbound by their little fingers, tiny toes, and round, soft bellies. There is something almost magical about a baby-- they are so innocent and vulnerable, so small, yet command such a large presence in any room. I wonder with amazement that they will someday, sooner than you can believe, grow into little people with personalities, opinions, and independent desires. I covet the snuggles they are having now and the smells, feel and touch of that baby, as my boys screech and hop around the house. At the same time, we are totally loving the stage we're in now-- the boys are exciting, marvelous, and full of themselves as they learn new skills, gather knowledge and explore the world and their place in it every day.
Whatever your stage, enjoy your Mother's Day-- I hope that your little ones will fill your day with their own special touches, be it time to yourself for some pampering, a sticky breakfast in bed, or just some snuggles and giggly kisses.
All my best on your special day,
Gretchen, EssentialMom.com

Join the Westchester Children's Museum!
2nd annual Explore-A-Thon Family Fundraiser
On Sunday, June 1, children can explore the magical learning laboratory being planned for the future Westchester Children's Museum (WCM) at "Explore-A-Thon 2008". Modeled after a traditional walk-a-thon, the Explore-A-Thon benefits the campaign for the WCM while taking "explorers" on a gentle mile-long journey along the Boardwalk at Playland in Rye, NY. The event, now in its second year, begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.
Explorers will receive a passport to discover interactive Exploration Stations modeled after future exhibits at the WCM located along the walking route around the historic Playland Bathhouses. Explorers will get their passports stamped each time they complete an Exploration Station, which feature physical, environmental, science, music and art activities. This year's event features seven Exploration Stations. Each Exploration Station offers an opportunity for hands-on learning that's fun for kids, for example, this year's Explore-A-Thon includes an Ecology Station where children can explore the underwater ecosystem just off our shores, and a Water Station where children can investigate how water flows downstream. We are also developing Construction, Light, and Wind Stations, as well as the ever-popular Bubble Station, and a Physical Challenge.
Families interested in participating in Explore-A-Thon 2008 can visit www.discoverwcm.org or call 914-421-5050 to register. Each Explorer family is encouraged to raise $200 in sponsorships. Explorer Teams of 10 families are encouraged to raise $2,000 in sponsorships. Individuals and community groups can be "Explorer Buddies" and sponsor children from The Port Chester Carver Center, The Westhab Shelter in White Plains, or The Elm Street Community Center in Yonkers to attend Explore-A-Thon 2008.
About the Westchester Children's Museum
The Westchester Children's Museum will be a vibrant, hands-on learning laboratory where children with their families, caregivers or teachers can explore the history, arts, environment, and cultural diversity of our local and global communities. The proposed site of the Westchester Children's Museum is the historic landmark Bathhouses on the Long Island Sound at Rye Playland. The iconic pavilions provide nearly 38,000 square feet of space for temporary and permanent exhibits, classrooms, a birthday party room, performance space, restaurant/cafe, gift shop, and other amenities. The WCM is in the midst of a campaign to raise funds to build the exhibitions and operations of the new museum. For additional information about the Westchester Children's Museum, call 914-421-5050 or visit www.discoverWCM.org. | | |
