Discover Camp is based around the work of Anthony Rich, an educator, professional developer and hobbyist and is the first of its kind in Westchester and possibly the country. Rich is the Technology Integration Specialist for the Eastchester Public Schools and hobbies have always been a big part of his life.
Rich is very passionate about what he's created, "Most kids today love technologies but have no idea how to build things. My classes teach kids how to read schematic diagrams, follow instructions, identify parts and tools, and practice the patience needed to complete long term projects." Each radio controlled car kit includes about 300 pieces and takes about 30 hours to complete. "I emphasize supportive independence. That may sound like an oxymoron but children need to be allowed to take risks and work their own way through problems. In my programs we slow the process down and teach kids how to take one step at a time to complete a long term goal."
The classes at Discover Camp are cumulative. Children in the first year learn how to build simple cars and rockets but the emphasis is on reading instruction manuals and using tools. The introduction to rocketry course is always a very popular class.
Children eventually graduate to the Rich's Racing Academy where everyone builds a Radio Controlled Car. These kits are extremely complicated and are by no means toys. "We support the children every step of the way but will not do the work for them. Since the children enter this class with skills from previous classes they are well prepared. It's amazing to follow the children over several years and see their progress. I've had children take my classes for as long as seven years.
Classes will take place over four weeks this summer at Holy Rosary School in Hawthorne from June 30th to July 25th. More information can be found at the Camp's website: www.DiscoverCamp.net
Unplug your children from their video games and introduce them to hobbies that could last a lifetime.
