Almost ten years ago my mother was diagnosed with cancer and my world melted. I have never been so frightened, felt so alone, or been so helpless. The word cancer itself is something people whisper in certain tones as if talking about it makes you susceptible to catching it. No matter what sort of cancer a person has, it is a terrifying ordeal that touches every part of your life and those of your loved ones.
My mother is one of the lucky ones though, a cancer survivor. She fought her way through chemotherapy and radiation with spirit and determination, yet it was a grueling process that left her nauseous, vulnerable, and weak in a way I had never seen her before.
My mother is lucky not only because she survived, but because she had many friends and family members looking out for her and she had a relatively short stint with a positive conclusion-- others are not so lucky, their fight lasts longer or takes a deeper toll. For many cancer sufferers, the fight is both physical and mental-- you have to stay in the game and fight even on the bad days, and maintain the hardest thing imaginable-- hope.
As a salute to the many people currently battling cancer, the American Cancer Society presents Daffodil Days: "The Daffodil-- the 1st flower of spring, a symbol of hope, renewal, and for the American Cancer Society, the promise that one day our world will be free of cancer." Proceeds from Daffodil Days help support the ACS's Research, Avocacy, Education and Services programs.
A bunch of 10 fresh-cut daffodils is $10. A Boyd's Bear and a Bunch is $25 (quantities are limited). A Gift of Hope: a beautiful bunch of daffodils delivered to a cancer patient in a vase to help brighten their day and spread the message of Hope. The Gift of Hope you purchase will be delivered to a health-care facility in your area chosen by the American Cancer Society. The cost for a Gift of Hope delivery is $20.
Amy Ferguson, a local Daffodils Days representative in Mount Kisco, will be taking the orders for ACS-- she can be reached by email at amy@fergs.us. The flowers will be delivered to Amy the week of March 12th, and she will coordinate with you on delivery. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested. |
