About Us

Since 2000, we have concentrated on one thing - EQUINE REPRODUCTION.
That experience has led to the development of a nationally respected Embryo Transfer Program. Year after year, this program boasts industry leading pregnancy rates (per embryo with a viable heartbeat at 26 days) for both shipped and on-site transfers. This allows Royal Vista to back its service with a LIVE FOAL GUARANTEE.

Embryo Vitrification

Ryan Coy, DVM

The ability to preserve valuable genetics is important in the equine industry. Royal Vista Southwest understands this need. That is why vitrification is available at RVSW, one of the world's largest embryo transfer facilities. Vitrification allows for a reliable and successful cryopreservation of your mare's embryo. Embryos can be flushed at our facility or transported across the country to Royal Vista Southwest for vitrification and storage.

Vitrification is a process in which water is removed and cryopreservatives are drawn into the cells. A high concentration of cryopreservative within the cells is essential to prevent the formation of ice crystals within and around individual Embryocells. Crystallization is a very sudden and explosive event and can result in destruction of cellular contents and cell membrane integrity. All of these are essential for growth and development of the embryo. The final step in the vitrification process is to cool the embryo to an extremely low temperature so that all molecules of the embryonic cells and of the cryopreservatives cease movement and are said to be in a "glass like" state. Once the "glass like" state is achieved, the embryo is maintained in liquid nitrogen at a constant temperature of -196° C (-321° F). Embryos properly vitrified and maintained in a "glass like" state, in a well maintained liquid nitrogen tank, can be stored indefinitely with no loss of viability.

The warming or thawing of the embryo in preparation for transfer into a recipient mare is a crucial step in establishing a pregnancy. When embryos are thawed, the cells are rehydrated and the cryopreservatives are removed so the embryonic cells can regain function to then continue to grow and divide. Thawing embryos is an exact procedure and should be carried out only by competently trained technicians.

We are experiencing high pregnancy rates for thawed embryos using quality recipient mares at Royal Vista Southwest. Vitrification of embryos is a great way to maximize your mare's normal breeding season by storing embryos late in the season for early transfer the following year.
