Passive Transfer

James W. Bailey, DVM

The term passive transfer refers to the transfer of antibodies from the mare's colostrum, to the blood of the foal. The foal is capable of absorbing whole proteins (antibodies) through the gut wall the first 18 hours of life. This is critical since the foal is born with no antibodies and an immune system that cannot make antibodies for a few weeks.

Without a high enough level of antibodies, or IgG, the foal will become ill and may die. Failure can be a result of the mare leaking her colostrum before the foal is born, the foal not nursing enough the first few hours or a failure of the foal to absorb the antibodies.

All foals should have an IgG test at 18 to 24 hours to assess the level of IgG in the blood. If the level is low, IgG can be boosted with a plasma transfusion.

FREE ET Winner Announced

On February 1, 2012, the drawing for the Free Embryo Transfer was held in the Royal Vista Southwest offices.  After numbers were  randomly drawn to select 4 finalists, the 4 email addresses were printed for the final drawing.  In the absence of  an "Impartial Employee" to do the actual drawing, it was decided that MICK our favorite canine should draw!!

Congratulations to the winner, JULIE WHITECALFE of Garrison, North Dakota!!!  After speaking with Julie and her family, they have decided to use the Free Embryo Transfer on their mare Tomboy Dancer (APHA).  Julie is new to Royal Vista Southwest and we look forward to working with her and her fine mare this season.

When asked about their mare and future plans, Julie replied:

"Tomboy Dancer, affectionately known as Dolly, has been a member of our rodeo family since she was three. She started her career as a five yr old and never missed a summer being hauled until we retired her last fall at the age of seventeen. Dolly is an amazing athlete with a heart of gold and has personality for days. She loves to travel and always skips into the trailer as if to say 'Come on guys we're late!' She gives a 110% every time she enters the arena and even puffs up when she's made a good run. Dolly shines as a breakaway and heeling horse but is an outstanding hazing, goat tying, barrel horse as well. We have always wanted a baby out of Dolly but have never had the chance to make it happen. With this great opportunity we plan on breeding Dolly to PC Frenchmans Hayday aka Dinero, in hopes of our next super star."

Some of Tomboy Dancer's career highlights:
