TD Bank Recycling Tips

Pass It, Don't Trash It

Rather than throwing away your old clothes or household items, pass these unwanted items on to organizations or charities that will find a new use. Whether it is a T-shirt you feel is out of style, a pair of shoes that no longer fits, or a household item you no longer use, these items can be given a new life through recycling. Check websites such as Freecycle or local charity shops such as Goodwill and Salvation Army before tossing useable items into the trash.  After all, one person's trash may be another's treasure.

How is the season progressing thus far in terms of training and competition?

2012 is going great. The team has come together great. Everyone really gets along well, and there is a great attitude throughout the team. It is a fun, but a very serious/professional environment. I hope the team can continue to grow and mesh, and with that, the results are going to come. We've been close a lot this year, but we keep just missing it. It is going to come though. For me personally, I feel great. My training has been going well, and I think my fitness is progressing nicely. I have had a great race program, which is helping me to prepare really well for 2 of my big goals: ToC and US pro. I am excited to wear the jersey on home turf at ToC this year. It is going to be another exciting race. I feel like my experience in the peloton is getting better now, too. There is a huge learning curve in cycling, and because I started so late, I have a lot of catching up to do. I am always learning from my teammates and staff. I am lucky to have such great resources!

How has your victory last year in Greenville changed your attitude and overall presence in the Pro Peloton?

The obvious change is simply the notoriety or respect in the peloton. I am a little bit more noticeable or known because of the jersey. Whether I like that or not, I haven't decided! There is definitely a little more pressure to feel like you need to do something spectacular now, but I just try to keep a level head and do the job I am asked to do to the best of my ability. Cycling isn't easy. There are good and bad days. You have to keep your cool, go with the flow, and always do your best. That's all that can be expected, so I always do my best whether it is for the team or me personally.

Can you share your individual and team approach (strategy) to defending your crown in Greenville this May?

There hasn't been any discussion of it. Obviously I would love to defend it, but there is no specific plan on how to do it. It is an interesting course because there are many possibilities for how the race can play out: breakaway (Ben King), the usual small group, or even a large group sprint is possible depending on how the race is ridden. We'll have to see on race day what plays out before a final strategy is made.

Seeing the illustrious list of previous US National Champions, has last year's victory officially sunk in yet?

I honestly don't know what the feeling of "sunk in" is. I can say that I feel honored to be on the list and wear the jersey to represent the USA in the pro peloton. I hope that I am wearing it as honorably as previous winners. Also, I will definitely fight to have the opportunity to wear the jersey again.

Stars and Stripes Challenge presented by Amgen

Are you up for the challenge? If so, register now and help make a positive impact to the cancer community of Greenville.  The Stars and Stripes Challenge presented by Amgen is your chance to pedal on the very roads that the Pros will compete on just hours later. This charity ride helps raise money for the Greenville Hospital System Cancer Center and Breakaway from Cancer national initiative. The 22-mile recreational ride will take place the morning (7:30am) of Monday, May 28th with a start/finish line on the corner of Main and McBee Street in Downtown Greenville, South Carolina. The USA Cycling National Road Race Championships is to follow later that afternoon.  In addition, there is a 12-mile family fun ride planned along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, and is still part of the important fundraising effort.
