From Executive Vice President Carol Green

April 6, 2012

Greetings!   Carol Green

As we step into spring, let's enjoy the season and all it has to offer: flowers blooming, spring cleaning and a time of renewal.

Whatever your spring traditions may be, your PTA has a close parallel. This is our time to renew. Make plans to attend the California State PTA Convention and/or the Ninth District Leadership Conference. These gatherings will renew your inspiration to do great things for the children in your community - renew your PTA leadership skills - renew your friendships with fellow PTA volunteers and enjoy a wonderful and inspiring long weekend.

This is PTA time for spring cleaning. Since your new PTA officers have been elected, take this time to clean out your files and pass along information to the new officers. Even if it's not perfect, pass it on.

Take some time to smell the flowers. Congratulate yourself and your team for the things you've done well. Get ready for the wonderful activities to come, and enjoy the process.

Happy Spring!  A time of renewal, cleaning and new growth for both you and your PTA.

Carol

NOW IS THE TIME TO TURN IN YOUR SIGNED OCOF PETITIONS
Rebecca Hernandez, VP Legislation
Rebecca Hernandez

Thank you to the many many PTA leaders who have responded to our trainings, electronic communications and phone calls. You've heeded the call to TRANSFORM Education Funding in our state for years to come by working to qualify for the November ballot, the Our Children Our Future Initiative.  Many of you have been out in your communities with friends and families gathering signatures over the past FIVE weeks. Submit each of those petitions back to the OCOF San Diego Office to be counted towards our goal of 10,000 signatures. How to turn in your petitions.

Beth Bacting

We salute the 21 units in Ninth District PTA that achieved 100% membership of their full-time credentialed teachers! PTA honors the support and loyalty of teachers - the "T" in PTA. Each unit will receive one free registration to the California State PTA Convention in May! See the list of winners.

COME TO CONVENTION ORIENTATION
Tuesday, April 17 at 7 pm
Ninth District PTA will be hosting an orientation for all our members going to the California State PTA Convention in Anaheim in May. This is a must for convention first-timers! You'll get tips on how to get the most out of convention plus meet fellow delegates. You'll hear about our Ninth District PTA "Bunco Fun Night and Dinner" Thursday night of convention - always a highlight. If you're going to convention, don't miss the orientation.

PRESIDENTS, WE NEED YOUR ROSTERS

After you hold your election for next year's officers, make sure you send your roster to your Council or to Ninth District PTA if out-of-council. This is the duty of this year's president spelled out in your bylaws. If you have board vacancies, go ahead and send what you have - you can always update the roster as positions are filled. We must have the home address for the president so they can receive an important mailing to their home over the summer.

SUMMER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Darlene Harris, VP Leadership
Darlene Harris new
Be sure you save the date for our Summer Leadership Conference at the University of San Diego on Saturday, June 2 from 8 am to 3:30 pm. This is the biggest PTA training event in San Diego! It's the best way to get your board trained and ready to go for next year. Preregistration is $50 per person and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Look for your registration packet in the mail.

National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry to introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry. Here are some ways to celebrate!

  1. Celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day Select a poem you love, carry it with you, and share it with co-workers, family and friends.
  2. Read a book of poetry Poetry is a response to the daily necessity of getting the world right.
  3. Memorize a poem Getting a poem or prose passage truly "by heart" implies getting it by mind and memory and understanding and delight.
  4. Revisit a poem Why not brush the dust off some of our American classics and give them a fresh read?
  5. Recite a poem to family and friends You can use holidays or birthdays as an opportunity to celebrate with a poem that is dear to you or one that reminds you of the season.

DOES YOUR UNIT HAVE A CHARITABLE TRUST NUMBER?
All PTAs must apply this year to avoid penalties
Every PTA needs to apply for a Charitable Trust (CT) number by December 2012 and file an RRF-1. If you're not sure if your PTA has applied, call your Council. To apply, you need to fill out a short application and submit with current bylaws (within three years), a $25 check and a letter of determination. In honor of National Poetry Month...

"Listen to the musn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me...Anything can happen, child. Anything can be."

-- Shel Silverstein, American poet and children's book author
