Greetings!
As we hold elections for our new PTA officers remember this is a wonderful opportunity to build new leaders. Keep in mind, you can fill open positions with board elections and presidential appointments so keep looking around for great additions to your boards.
If you're lucky enough to have a full board, welcome new volunteers to committees and events--you never know where your next leaders will come from.
Ninth District PTA president Karen Fleck started her PTA volunteer days as the snow cone lady. I got involved after a casual conversation at McDonald's with another mom. I said something like "let me know if you ever need any help." That night the PTA president called and invited me to a meeting.
Asking someone to be an officer right off the bat can be a little daunting. Try to keep smaller volunteer jobs on your board. If a future leader can serve on a committee, have fun, help out and successfully finish the task, they are likely to come back for the next fun volunteer adventure.
Having lots of volunteers each doing a little, helps your PTA stay strong and gives you a pool of future leaders. Enjoy your spring and remember to share your PTA fun with other parents, neighbors and friends.

WE SPEAK UP AGAINST CUTS
| | |
PTA joins Superintendents at Press Conference
Jay Steiger, Ninth District PTA vice president, stood side by side with superintendents from around San Diego County, to alert the community to the devastating affects of the budget cuts on kids. In his prepared remarks, Jay called on the governor and legislature "to stand up for our children, stand up for our future, and stop the cuts to education." He also spoke about the "Our Children, Our Future" initiative and why PTA supports this as a long-term solution.

TURN IN YOUR MID-YEAR AUDIT
| | |
Michael Opfer, Auditor
Now is the time to turn in your mid-year audit to your Council or District (if you don't have a Council). The mid-year audit covers the first six months of this fiscal year - July 1 through December 30 for most units. I look at every audit forwarded to Ninth District PTA - it's one more way we keep our PTAs in good financial shape!

DOES YOUR UNIT HAVE A CHARITABLE TRUST NUMBER?
| | |
All PTAs must apply this year to avoid penalties
Every PTA needs to apply for a Charitable Trust (CT) number by December 2012 and file an RRF-1. If you're not sure if your PTA has applied, call your Council. To apply, you need to fill out a short application and submit with current bylaws (within three years), a $25 check and a letter of determination. The California State PTA website has easy-to-follow instructions. If you need help, contact your Council. Learn how to apply.

Classrooms need desks, chairs, textbooks -- and good clean air. Especially for the 1 in 6 California students with asthma. How is the indoor air quality in your school or school district? What products does your school use to clean classrooms? Winning schools can receive up to $2,000. Learn more.
