LEARNING WITH
THE BRAIN IN MIND
It's BACK TO SCHOOL and time to break out the books, focus on homework, and foster the joyous pursuit of knowledge. I just began teaching my new university courses this past month, and it is truly such a delight being able to educate, empower, and engage the minds of my students for another year. As an educator, I know first-hand that learning can be a challenge for some students. No matter how determined and hard these students try, they sometimes need that extra boost to keep up with the rest of the class. As a professor specializing in neurocognitive studies, I explore how the human brain influences our health and wellness. So you can imagine how thrilled I am that the focus of this entire issue of the newsletter is on "Mind, Brain, and Leaning" as it is a topic very close to my heart. Whether you're a parent, educator, or a student yourself, I hope this newsletter helps you discover the emerging field of educational neuroscience, a discipline that integrates the latest research in psychology, neuroscience, and education to enhance learning.
In my blog piece Building a Better Brain: Five Tips For a Better Learning I reveal my own personal secrets that I tell to my own students how to use simple cognitive tools to enhance learning and academic performance. In the video and article of the month, we explore the latest scientific research showing how mediation, play, and emotions play an important role in learning. I've also added a new section to the newsletter the Dr. Jay's Book of the Month, in which I'll offer my personal suggestions on a recent book exploring each monthly theme.
Speaking of learning, even if you can't be a student in my university, I'll be offering two courses open to the public this fall: one online and the other a one-day workshop here in Los Angeles.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter as it allows you, your students, or you kids that extra cognitive boost to begin "Learning with the Brain in Mind." Of course, please feel free to share with other parents, educators, students, or even your own children.
Happy Learning!

Building a Smarter Brain:
5 Tips for Better Learning
With kids now back in school and off for college, the joy of another academic year begins. We all want our children and the future generation to aspire to their personal best in all areas of life, but how can we encourage these bright minds to excel in learning? As a professor currently teaching neuro-cognitive studies and someone genuinely passionate for my students to achieve optimal performance, I am delighted to share these personally and scientifically proven tips from educational neuroscience that can help improve focus, enhance memory, and more importantly make learning fun!
1) TAKE A BREATHER
We've all heard the phrase "Take a Breather" when we experience stress, frustration, or overwhelm, but it turns out that the phrase can now be backed up by neuroscience. The latest research into mind-body medicine consistently shows that slow, deep, mindful breathing into the lower belly triggers the body's natural relaxation-response, a mechanism that is wired into the human nervous system and triggered by consciously shifting the quality of the breath in the body. It now appears that the body's natural relaxation-response is not only an evolutionary tool for survival, but a vital mechanism to improve focus, maintain calm, and boost memory. Read More...
2) BEFORE YOU ACHIEVE IT, YOU FIRST HAVE TO VISUALIZE & BELIEVE IT
3) SHAKE IT OUT: MOVE, PLAY, & HAVE FUN
4) BE IN NATURE
5) RELAX & SLEEP: MORE ZZZZ's MEAN MORE A's
