Natural History

- Beginning part of May bobwhite quail are nesting. Average clutch is around 14 eggs.
- Bobwhite nest within 30-50 feet of woodlands.
- Bobwhite incubation takes 23 days and the newly hatched chicks are "precocial," meaning they are running around with the hen as soon as they hatch, feed themselves, and are about the size of a big bumble bee.
- If the Bobwhite eggs or chicks are lost to weather, or predation the pair will re-nest and begin again. This also happens naturally after the broods are a few weeks old.
- Our weather this May was cool, wet and stormy. These were not positive influences on our wild quail populations, Making it doubly important to not mow or disturb grassy areas within that 30-50 feet of timber from April through September.
- We have muskrat kits playing in one of our ponds.
- Whip-poor-wills, frogs, and cicadas are blending there calls into a pleasant symphony beginning at dusk.
- Timber Hills Lake is a woodpecker haven I have personally observed, hairy, downy, red-headed, yellow shafted flickers, re-bellied woodpeckers, last but not least the largest of our woodpeckers, the crow sized, 16-19 inch pileated woodpecker.
- Pileated woodpeckers make rectangular holes rather than the traditional round ones.
- If you like to see "color" in your birds we can treat you to Gold Finches, Eastern Bluebirds, Baltimore Orioles, Indigo Buntings, Cardinals, Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks and Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds
- Butterfly weed is starting to bloom in our prairie sections and there are butterflies everywhere.
- We have six Buffalo calves this year.
- Elk calves and Whitetail fawns are far to numerous to try to count.
- Elk Bulls and Whitetail Bucks have their antlers in velvet and are growing at astonishing rates. There'll be a lot of trophy size racks this fall...guaranteed!

Spring is fading and Summer is upon us. We've been alive with excitement this Spring at Timber Hills Lake. We had turkey hunts, fishing tournaments, record numbers of both new folks and old friends staying in our comfortable cabins, lots of leisure fishing, and just resting and relaxing in our country atmosphere.
Of course, we don't apologize when your leisure is interrupted by catching an 8 pound large mouth bass, 15 inch crappie, 6 pound rainbow trout, or when your peaceful view of the lake and prairies from the deck of your cabin gets a little more exciting as a herd of buffalo or elk graze across the horizon while a rosy sun sets in the west. It's all just part of the adventure, when you stay at Timber Hills Lake.

Gobbler's Season Gone Wild turkey season is over for another Spring. There are still a lot of gobblers around for next season. New broods are present and if your vision is sharp enough you might catch a glimpse of the poults scurrying around and pecking for insects.

Take Dad "OUT," for Fathers Day
You can, "get two birds with one stone," by giving your Outdoors-man Dad an outdoor gift. First, Dad gets something he'll really be able to enjoy; time away from the routine, and in an environment that makes a connection with his wild heart. Second, kids have a need to experience the "outdoor world." One of the greatest disconnects existing in our nation today is between our children and the great outdoors. To often they exist on a malnourished diet of flickering screen images, and unavailable Dad time. When, what they need is to have their imaginations set in motion by the, "Wonders of Nature," and "Outside Dad Time," . For further information about getting kids outdoors see Kansans for Children in Nature/KCEE, and No Child Left Indoors, or Last Child in the Woods/Saving our Children from Nature Deficient Disorder by Richard Louv and of course, Family Fun on our own website. Remember, Dads and Grandfathers we can also share our wild heritage and create a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts by inviting other young persons to come along with us on our adventures...see also Pass it On! Outdoor Mentors.
Outstanding outdoor Father's Day gifts are still available at Timber Hills Lake. Adventures for your Dad range from Cabin stays and Fishing, to any of our Hunts for Trophy whitetails, elk, buffalo, and turkey. Or the ultimate gift of an Upland Bird Hunting and Fishing Membership for the whole year. For more information, check out our website www.timberhillslake.com. We're big on family at Timber Hills Lake. Below are some photos of Dads and kids sharing adventures. Schedule an adventure with us and make your own memories.

There are still Non Resident Deer Permits

Whoa! Have you heard! You have been given a second chance if you want to do a range hunt at Timber Hills Lake. In past years about 70% of our quest's range hunts have resulted in bucks in the 150-170 inch range and one well over 200 inches. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced that leftover nonresident deer permits will be sold online and over-the-counter on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 12:01 a.m. June 15. Timber Hills Lake is in Bourbon County and is located in Management Unit 11. There are 872 permits left over in Unit 11 for the 2011 season. They will be sold to any nonresident who does not already have a 2011 permit at license vendors, online at the KDWP website under "License/Permits," or by phoning 620-672-5911 and asking for Licensing. This permit is required if you want to plan a range hunt at Timber Hills Lake this fall. These are semi-guided, 5 day hunts, hundreds of acres, blinds and trees stands, 4 nights lodging in our comfortable cabins, with home-style meals served in our lodge. We field dress, haul, and cape out your trophy. We will also gladly help make arrangements with local meat processors and taxidermists. Bow or Black powder, $2,500; Rifle, $3,600 No add'l trophy fees. KS Hunt Regs Apply. Trophy hunting inside our preserve do not require a permit. We're not just sitting on our hands at Timber Hills Lake. We are nearing completion of a sandy swimming area right in front of the cabins and we have a new building under construction where we'll be able to handle even larger family reunions, corporate getaways and weddings. This building will have a 12 X 80 foot porch that overlooks our 40 acre lake, and will house large rustic tables, a bar, pool tables, and other indoor recreational activities. We're looking forward to its completion this summer so we can better serve you.
As always, we have cabins for your overnight comfort and a lodge that makes you feel right at home. These are great places for your family or business outing. But, I got to tell you that we are having more and more weekends when we are booked up. So, when you know your plans, the sooner you clue us in the better, so we can confirm your reservations. Our home-style meals and catering add an extra..ahhh...and...mmm to your adventure. Feel free to contact us with any questions you might have about Timber Hills Lake.
We'd love you to schedule an adventure with us!
