Natural History

- Starting at the end of March listen for male quail and their traditional "bobwhite" whistle as they try to attract hens.
- Wild turkey are native to North America.
- In the winter, the toms or gobblers flock together, separate from the jakes (young males) and hens.
- Gobbling, strutting, tail fanning, and wing dragging are all part of the courtship ritual used by the toms to attract hens.
- The timing of this behavior may vary from year to year, but it usually has two peaks, the first in early April and the second around the end of April.
- Turkey calls include yelps, cackles, cutting, purring, putting. The toms also spit, drum, and of course, gobble.
- Early in the morning, hooting like an owl or cawing like a crow will usually encourage any toms in the area to begin to gobble.
- How cautious a turkey is, is a direct result to the predation pressure in the area, usually from coyotes and bobcats and maybe having been shot at by other hunters.

OK, spring is here from a calendar standpoint, but it snowed day before yesterday. What's up with that! No, actually the trees and bushes are budding at Timber Hills Lake. Things are greening up and there are even a few flowers here and there. Today, believe it or not, we have sunshine and blue skies. Oh...Yeah! And, that is not an April fools joke. Ha!
Check out what we have going on right now and make tracks our direction and you can check out the tracks around here...whitetail, elk, buffalo, turkey, fox, bobcat, coyote...you get the picture.

Trout Madness extended through April
When it comes to catching trout there has been a lot fun and excitement around here, but the weather turned off cold for a while, so we have decided to extend this special through April. $20 will still give you the opportunity to feel the thrill of one of the 2 to 8 pound rainbows we have stocked our lake with. Don't forget about the golden trout as well. There is a three trout limit per $20 fee. Take a look at the folks and their trout from this last month below and in the column to the left...
