  Natural History

Trout
  • Trout are in the same family as salmon. Like their cousins they have those great omega oils that are so good for you and your heart.
  • Most native wildflower seeds require several months of cold wet weather to germinate.
  • Skunks don't hibernate but they do sleep for long periods during really cold temperatures.  Sometimes several even share the same den. Not exactly something you'd want to just stumble on to.
  • It is impossible to identify the sex of a whitetail deer  by its tracks.
  • Whitetail deer, Elk, and Buffalo are all Ungulates.  There are hoofed mammals that chew the cud.
  • Pin oak trees lose their leaves in the spring.  Look around, they turn brown in the fall and hang on all winter till spring.

Winter

Timber Hills Lake Winter Wonderland

Ever wondered what your favorite haunts look like in the winter?  I took this photo last week.  You can see the Lodge in the center and the cabins are a little to the left, behind the massive oak.  Our total snow accumulation over the last three snows was about 25 inches with drifts easily to 3-4 feet.  We have had wind chills of -25 F. The lodge and cabins are warm and cheery inside and a real nice place to be...inside looking out...that is.

Buffalo Hunts January - March
Buffalo Hunt

Buffalo Hunts are going on now at Timber Hills Lake. This huge bull was taken by Kirk Chandler (in the middle next to his son, Quinn).  Kirk's wife, Rhonda, and daughter Kay were there as well, taking photos (Rhonda took this one) and sharing in an adventurous week-end.  Our guides are in the photo as well.  That's Kalob Allen on the left and Seth Rice on the right.  We still have dates available in February and March. $3,250 for a Herd Bull, $2,500 for a Mature Bull, and $1,700 for a cow.

March Trout Madness

Irish legends profess gold at the end of the rainbow.  I don't know if Timber Hills Lake is at the end of the rainbow or not, but we've got a lake stocked with rainbow and golden TROUT. Over 400 pounds of 2 - 8 pound trout added last October. That's Madness and we're giving you a chance to join in.

$20 during the month of March will get you a days fishing for trout. Lots of room for fly-fishing. Three Fish Limit.  Catch and release all day, keeping only the three biggest of your adventure. At this point you will definitely need photos of your catch to brag to your friends in person and cyberspace.

You can ice down your cleaned trout and take them home in your cooler or you can cook them here on our grill.  I like to squeeze juice from half of lemon inside the two halves.  Now cut a couple quarter inch slices off the lemon and lay them inside, along with a scoop of butter and a dash of herbs.  Wrap this up tight in foil and place along the edge of some hot coals or on our grill.  Cook till they're done. Times will vary according to the size of the monster you caught, but when you open that foil...Mmmm...You'll know you're in rainbow heaven!

Timber Hills Lake may not be at the end of the rainbow...but there are times you can see it from here.

We have cabins for your overnight comfort.  A lodge that makes you feel right at home and is also a great place for your corporate meeting or outing.

Home-style meals and catering add an extra..ahhh..and..mmm..to your adventure.
