At the age of 22, Dan Walters was the nation's youngest daily newspaper editor for The Hanford Sentinel. In 1975, Walters joined The Sacramento Union's capitol bureau as Jerry Brown began his governorship. Walters later became the Union's capital bureau chief.
 
In 1981, he began writing the state's only daily newspaper column devoted to California political, economic and social events. In 1984, he and the column moved to the Sacramento Bee. He has written more than 7,500 articles about California and its politics; his column now appears in more than 50 California newspapers. In addition, he has written, co-authored, and contributed to several books. Walters is a frequent guest on national television commenting on California politics.
