This July 2011 report represents the first study of the U.S. clean economy to provide timely information that is both comprehensive enough in its scope and detailed enough in its categorization to inform national, state, and regional leaders on the dynamics of the U.S. low-carbon and environmental goods and services "super-sector" as they are transpiring in regions and metropolitan areas.
You can also view findings by state in the report's interactive indicator map.

SEED Membership Grows & Member Orientation;
No Summer Vacation for Building the Green Economy!
While many of our campuses are quiet with summer break, we know that is only a calm front to lots of work continuing to happen behind-the-scenes. A recent uptick in SEED memberships tells us colleges are planning for new and refined green and sustainability programs this coming year. In July, 21 colleges from 16 unique states joined the AACC's SEED Initiative, created in partnership with ecoAmerica.
To help you get started with SEED, we'd like to give your college's designated SEED Campus Ambassador (the most appropriate faculty member, dean, workforce development administrator, or sustainability officer) an orientation to our offerings and discuss how SEED can best contribute to your green collar workforce development programs. Please contact Todd Cohen, director of AACC sustainability initiatives to set up a phone appointment.
We continue to enhance SEED's offerings for members. Mark your calendars for September 23, 1 PM, EST for a webinar by SEED experts and our partners on the Department of Energy home retrofit standards and what they mean for community college energy efficiency programs. More details will follow soon.
And, visit the "For Members" page in the SEED Center where you'll find a newly added downloadable press release template and speaking points to help your college share why this initiative is valuable and how your stakeholders can join.
When we closed the academic year, we shared stories of SEED members' achievements including Northern Maine Community College that matriculated New England's first class of wind technicians. Registration for fall courses is now open on most campuses. Community College of Rhode Island will launch an energy utility certificate program to help create a more dynamic workforce. I am sure many SEED members are creating new programs and adding courses to serve our students and communities. We are proud of our achievements and ongoing efforts to grow the clean, green economy. Tell us what you are doing, we'd like to share your story.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jerry Weber
Chair, AACC Sustainability Task Force
President, College of Lake County

Success Stories
Connecting Community Colleges, Collaboration, Sharing Best Practices, Mentorship
The SEED Success Stories series provides an in-depth look at community college strategies and best practices to creatively and successfully address local and regional workforce needs. Published regularly after interviews and often site visits, SEED continues celebrating innovators in community college green workforce programs.
Bucks County Community College Fuels Green Training Through Continuing Education
While many colleges build training programs in response to local industry demand, BCCC has focused on a robust continuing education program. This has proven to be an extremely effective way to rapidly respond to the unpredictable and frequently changing technologies of the fluid regional clean energy sector. BCCC's efforts are even more fruitful thanks to its outreach to and programming for a specific population in need of retraining: U.S. military veterans returning from service.
Over the past several years, southern Bucks County, Pennsylvania, has lost once thriving manufacturing, chemicals production, and commercial construction industries and 23,000 jobs. Seeking a new employment base, the region focused on the possibilities of renewable energy-and specifically the wind sector. Gamesa, a leader in wind energy production and component manufacturing, made a $200 million investment (with 800 jobs) in the state, locating key operations in Bucks County. Read more.
Bucks County Community College has shared nearly two dozen sustainability and green economy courses in the SEED Sharing Community. Explore what's being taught at BCC and add your college's programs and courses, too.
In addition to the in-depth Success Stories, don't miss SEED's Sustainability Snapshots, quick spotlights on member colleges' effective efforts to align job training today with labor market needs of tomorrow. If your college has a Success Story or Sustainability Snapshot to share, let us know!
