Caldecott Honor recipient Ilse Plume will be at the Concord Bookshop to discuss the inspirations for the rich illustrations she creates for children's picture books. Ms. Plume will speak about the processes involved in her art, specifically addressing those she created for The Year Comes Round, which was written by Sid Farrar.
Ms. Plume is a local resident with a studio at the Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts; she teaches children's book illustration at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at Emerson Umbrella. She is collector and illustrator of children's songs and folk tales from around the world. She was inspired to illustrate children's books by her daughter, and her love of tales around the world was nurtured by her grandfather.
Ilse Plume has shown her work in exhibitions at the Lincoln Public Library, the DeCordova Museum, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. She is exhibiting one of six artists in "The Art of the Story: Illustration and Narrative Art" at the Emerson Umbrella Gallery through October 1.
Kirkus Reviews calls The Year Comes Round picture book of poetry "a richly illustrated view of the seasons through haiku." It contains twelve nature-themed haiku accompanied by lush illustrations which take the reader from January to December. The book is great way to introduce children to the traditional Japanese poetry form.
After her presentation and Q&A session, Ms. Plume will be personally inscribing books for your own library or gifts - we are taking pre-orders for those unable to attend the event. All are welcome to the program on Friday, September 14 at 4pm. The event is free and open to the public; seating begins at 3:30.
