Abundance in every moment

Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life

by Thich Nhat Hanh and Dr. Lilian Cheung

savor

"Together, Cheung and Hanh offer a primer on psychological and spiritual health, as well as a practical nutritional guide to healthier eating."
-- Harvard Magazine

Offering practical tools, including personalized goal setting, a detailed nutrition guide, and a mindful living plan, the authors help us to uncover the roots of our habits and then guide us as we transform our actions. Savor teaches us how to easily adopt the practice ofmindfulness and integrate it into eating, exercise, and all facets of our daily life, so that being conscious and present becomes a core part of our being.

Savor not only helps us achieve the healthy weight and well-being we seek, but it also brings to the surface the rich abundance of life available to us in every moment.

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, poet, scholar, and peace and human rights activist. He is the author of many books including the classics Peace Is Every Step and The Art of Power. Hanh speaks and writes extensively on meditation, mindfulness, and peace, and he leads retreats worldwide on the art of mindful living. Hanh lives in Plum Village, his meditation center in France.

A fresh way of thinking about spirituality that grows throughout life

Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life

by Richard Rohr

falling upward

In Falling Upward, Fr. Richard Rohr seeks to help readers understand the tasks of the two halves of life and to show them that those who have fallen, failed, or "gone down" are the only ones who understand "up."

Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite:

  • What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as "falling upward"
  • In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness
  • Rohr explains why the second half of life can and should be full of spiritual richness
  • Falling Upward offers a new view of how spiritual growth happens --> loss is gain

This important book explores the counterintuitive message that we grow spiritually much more by doing wrong than by doing right.

Author Richard Rohr is a regular contributing writer for Sojourners and Tikkun magazines. He is the author of several previous books, including Breathing Under Water.

Awakening a spirit of fulfillment and transformation

Aging as a Spiritual Practice: A Contemplative Guide to Growing Older and Wiser by Lewis Richmond

aging as a spiritual practice

... a new vision of the aging process, awakening a spirit of fulfillment and transformation.

Everything changes.

For Buddhist priest and meditation teacher Lewis Richmond, this fundamental Buddhist tenet is the basis for a new inner road map that emerges in the later years, charting an understanding that can bring new possibilities, fresh beginnings, and a wealth of appreciation and gratitude for the life journey itself.

In Aging as a Spiritual Practice, Richmond acknowledges the fear, anger, and sorrow many people experience when they must confront the indignities of their aging bodies and the unknowns associated with mortality. This wise, compassionate book guides readers through the four key stages of aging - such as "Lightning Strikes" (the moment we wake up to our aging) -as well as the processes of adapting to change, letting go of who we were, embracing who we are, and appreciating our unique life chapters.

Unlike many philosophical works on aging, however, this one incorporates illuminating facts from scientific researchers, doctors, and psychologists, as well as contemplative practices and guided meditations on aging's various challenges and rewards. The tandem of maintaining a healthy body and healthy relationships, infused with an active spiritual life, is explored in rejuvenating detail. Breath by breath, moment by moment, Richmond's teachings inspire limitless opportunities for a joy that transcends age.

Author Lewis Richmond is a Zen Buddhist priest and meditation teacher whose three previous books include the national bestseller Work as a Spiritual Practice. He lives in the San Francisco Bay area.
