Something Missing by Matthew Dicks

something missing

We highlighted this paperback last week; the protagonist is a quirky but lovable burglar who learns that he can't always be in control:

"Dicks combines the neurotic atmosphere of a Woody Allen film with the light touch of Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr novels ...

A very funny adventure about the mechanics of burglary and the fragility of an orderly life."

--Kirkus Reviews

Unexpectedly, Milo by Matthew Dicks

unexpectedly milo

"Filled with humor and sweetness,Unexpectedly, Milo reminds us that happiness can be found in the strangest of places."

-- BookPage

Matthew Dicks's second novel is also available in paperback. Unexpectedly, Milo is a humorous and poignant novel about a man who doesn't quite fit in.

The author visited the bookshop last week, and signed copies of both Something Missing and Unexpectedly, Milo. These paperbacks are on our shelves - good choices to tuck in your summer reading tote.

Hemingway biography appeared on over a dozen "best of" lists - now in paperback

Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost by Paul Hendrickson

hemingways boat

"There's never been a biography quite like this one.... The stories are rich with contradiction and humanity, and so raw and immediate you can smell the salt air"
-- Publisher's Weekly

Selected as a Top 10 Pick Best Books of 2011 by Publishers Weekly and landed on 13 other best-of-the-year lists, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Daily News, The Economist, and The Washington Post. Hemingway's Boat is now available in paperback!

Focusing on the years 1934 to 1961- from Hemingway's pinnacle as the reigning monarch of American letters until his suicide - Paul Hendrickson traces the writer's exultations and despair around the one constant in his life during this time: his beloved boat, Pilar.

Drawing on previously unpublished material, including interviews with Hemingway's sons, Hendrickson shows that for all the writer's boorishness, depression and alcoholism, and despite his choleric anger, he was capable of remarkable generosity-to struggling writers, to lost souls, to the dying son of a friend. Hemingway's Boat is both stunningly original and deeply gripping, an invaluable contribution to our understanding of this great American writer, published fifty years after his death.

Paul Hendrickson, a prize-winning feature writer for The Washington Post for more than twenty years, now teaches nonfiction writing at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of Seminary: Looking for the Light (an NBCC finalist); The Living and the Dead (an NBA finalist); and Sons of Mississippi (an NBCC winner). He has also written for The New York Times.

From the bestselling author of 1491: 1493 is now in paperback

1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created

by Charles C. Mann

1493 pbak

A deeply engaging new history of how European settlements in the post-Colombian Americas shaped the world, from the bestselling author of 1491.

Presenting the latest research by biologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians, Mann shows how the post-Columbian network of ecological and economic exchange fostered the rise of Europe, devastated imperial China, convulsed Africa, and for two centuries made Mexico City - where Asia, Europe, and the new frontier of the Americas dynamically interacted - the center of the world.

In this history, Mann uncovers the germ of today's fiercest political disputes, from immigration to trade policy to culture wars. In 1493, Mann has again given readers an eye-opening scientific interpretation of our past, unequaled in its authority and fascination.

Charles C. Mann is a three-time National Magazine Award finalist, he is the recipient of writing awards from several organizations. His 1491 won the National Academies Communication Award for the best book of the year.

Stephen King, time travel, and JFK - now in paperback

11/22/63 by Stephen King

11 22 63

"Quite possibly, King's most ambitious and accomplished novel to date."

-- NPR

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. 11/22/63 was named a top ten book of 2011 by The New York Times Book Review and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He is the recipient of the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. He lives in Bangor, Maine, with his wife, novelist Tabitha King.
