Greetings!

Greetings from Main Street!

Our next event is Sunday, March 18 at 3pm, when we'll visit with Madeline Miller and The Song of Achilles, a page-turning re-telling of The Iliad, said by The Guardian to be "a deeply affecting version of the Achilles story: a fully three-dimensional man - a son, a father, husband and lover - now exists where a superhero previously stood and fought."

And save the date of March 22 for a delightful evening of slideshow and conversation with award-winning novelist Howard Frank Mosher and his memoir, The Great Northern Express. Mr. Mosher is a quintessential New England storyteller - we're in for a treat!

The left sidebar of this note contains our complete events calendar; you can also check details on our website and/or rsvp on our Facebook page.

If you're unable to attend an event, but would like a signed copy of the book, simply call us to pre-order. We'll ask the author to inscribe it to your specifications, then hold it for pick up or arrange to have it shipped. hunger games movie edition

Madeline Miller and The Song of Achilles

song of achilles

Please join us at the Bookshop Sunday, March 18 at 3pm when Cambridge-based author Madeline Miller reads from and signs The Song of Achilles.

This is a thrilling and unique retelling of the legend of Achilles: a tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart -- a dazzling feat of the imagination that is already one of the most buzzed about books of the season.

Ann Patchett, bestselling author of Bel Canto and State of Wonder, says of The Song of Achilles "at once a scholar's homage to THE ILIAD and a startlingly original work of art by an incredibly talented new novelist. Madeline Miller has given us her own fresh take on the Trojan war and its heroes. The result is a book I could not put down."

Bookshop staff agree that this is a page-tuner, The Song of Achilles is an accessible retelling of The Iliad - love, war, politics, and family drama.

Join us as Mosher presents a slideshow and talk on his latest book, which chronicles his monumental road trip across 21st-century America on a book tour. Part travel memoir, part autobiography, this work is deeply personal and incredibly inspiring; this is Mosher at his best.

He was honored with the New England Independent Booksellers Association's President's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts and is the recipient of the Literature Award bestowed by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts

Here Come the Girl Scouts! by Shana Corey

here come the girl scoutsThis biography, in picture book format, is perfect for younger Girl Scouts - Daisys (Kindergarten) through Brownies (3rd Grade).

Juliette Gordon Low - Daisy to her friends and family - was not like most girls of the Victorian era. Prim and proper? Bosh! Dainty and delicate? How boring! She loved the outdoors, and she yearned for adventure! Born into a family of pathfinders and pioneers, she too wanted to make a difference in the world - and nothing would stop her. Combining her ancestors' passion for service with her own adventurous spirit and her belief that girls could do anything, she founded the Girl Scouts. One hundred years later, they continue to have adventures, do good deeds, and make a difference!

Juliette Gordon Low: The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts
by Stacy A. Cordery

In celebration of the Girl Scouts' centennial, a lively salutejuliette gordon low to its maverick founder.

This new biography of the founder of the Girl Scouts will give insight into the woman behind the program. An interesting book group selection - read the biography, dig out your old Brownie beanie, and discuss the book while munching s'mores!

Born at the start of the Civil War, Juliette Gordon Low grew up in Georgia, where she struggled to reconcile being a good Southern belle with her desire to run barefoot through the fields. Deafened by an accident, "Daisy" married a dashing British aristocrat and moved to England. But she was ultimately betrayed by her husband and dissatisfied by the aimlessness of privileged life.

Her search for a greater purpose ended when she met Robert Baden-Powell, war hero, adventurer, and founder of the Boy Scouts. Captivated with his program, Daisy aimed to instill the same useful skills and moral values in young girls - with an emphasis on fun. She imported the Boy Scouts' sister organization, the Girl Guides, to Savannah in 1912. Rechristened the Girl Scouts, it grew rapidly because of Juliette Low's unquenchable determination and energetic, charismatic leadership.

In Juliette Gordon Low, Cordery paints a dynamic portrait of an intriguing woman and a true pioneer whose work touched the lives of millions of girls and women around the world.

 Pulse: Stories by Julian Barnes

pulse pbak"Vibrant. . . . Full of life and voice. . . . As Barnes fans know, love itself is a lifeline for this playful, erudite writer." -San Francisco Chronicle

In these fourteen brilliant stories, Julian Barnes examines longing and loss, friendship and love, the historical past and contemporary life-all with his trademark wit and sharply observant eye.

A newly divorced man invades his reticent girlfriend's privacy, only to discover that the information he finds reveals his own callously shallow curiosity. A couple comes together through an illicit cigarette and a song shared over the din of a Chinese restaurant. A widower revisiting the Scottish island he treasured with his wife learns how difficult it is to overcome grief. And scattered throughout, a group of friends gather regularly at dinner parties, perfecting the art of cerebral, sometimes bawdy banter.

Each story in this extraordinary collection pulses with the resonance, spark, and poignant humor for which Barnes is justly heralded.

Julian Barnes is the author of two previous story collections, Cross Channel and The Lemon Table, and fourteen other books. He was awarded the Man Booker Prize in 2011 for his novel The Sense of an Ending. He lives in London.

We're "mad about Maisie"

A Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear

lesson in secrets pbk"The combination of period detail and intricate storytelling makes A Lesson in Secrets seem distant enough to be romantic but sufficiently modern to engage our sympathies."
-Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal

The Maisie Dobbs mystery series are a delight - set in post-WWI Great Britain, Maisie has proven herself as a reliable and effective private detective.

In the summer of 1932, the career of psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs takes an exciting new turn when she accepts an undercover assignment from the British Secret Service. Sent to pose as a junior lecturer at a private college in Cambridge, she will monitor any activities "not in the interests of His Majesty's government."

To unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of an administrator, the investigator must overcome a reluctant Secret Service, discover shameful hidden truths about Britain's conduct during the Great War, and face off against the rising power of the Nazi Party, as the storm clouds of World War II gather on the horizon.

A Lesson in Secrets is now available in paperback. Jacqueline Winspear's ninth Maisie Dobbs novel, Elegy for Eddie, will be published later this month; call us to pre-order/reserve a copy.
