Margot Livesey and The Flight of Gemma Hardy

flight of gemma hardy

Please join us at the Bookshop Sunday, February 26 at 3pm when Margot Livesey reads from and signs her seventh novel, The Flight of Gemma Hardy.

"Absorbing....Ms. Livesey writes lovely, understated prose...[her] treks through the novel's pleasing natural landscapes...are almost as engaging as her navigation of Gemma's restless psyche."

 - Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal

A captivating tale, set in Scotland in the early 1960s, that is both an homage to and a modern variation on the enduring classic Jane Eyre.

Fate has not been kind to Gemma Hardy. Orphaned by the age of ten, neglected by a bitter and cruel aunt, sent to a boarding school where she is both servant and student, young Gemma seems destined for a life of hardship and loneliness. Yet her bright spirit burns strong. Fiercely intelligent, singularly determined, Gemma overcomes each challenge and setback, growing stronger and more certain of her path.

But Gemma's biggest trial is about to begin...a journey of passion and betrayal, secrets and lies, redemption and discovery, that will lead her to a life she's never dreamed of.

Margot Livesey has previously published six novels and a collection of short fiction. She is is currently a distinguished writer in residence at Emerson College. She lives with her husband, a painter, in Cambridge, MA.

The Baker's Daughter by Sarah McCoy

Sarah McCoy at bookshop

We had a delightful afternoon with Sarah McCoy and The Baker's Daughter.

This novel, set in both Nazi-era Germany and present-day El Paso, centers on two women who - by confronting the past - learn the value of friendship, family, and love, as well as the power of forgiveness and of second chances.

The novel is a feast for book groups, covering many discussable topics, and including a dozen recipes (of both German and Tex-Mex influence) that you might create to serve at your next meeting.

To see more of our event with Sarah McCoy, view our photo album on Facebook, and this video captured by Frank Breen of Carlisle Video.

We have signed copies of The Baker's Daughter on our shelves.

How to Read New York: A Crash Course in Big Apple Architecture

 by Will Jones

how to read new york

We can't say enough about these Rizzoli guides. The series - which includes How to Read Buildings and How to Read Churches - has added two new guides.

Pick up How to Read New York for your next trip to the City (or for walking those streets in your head). Considered ssential reading for both native New Yorkers and tourists alike, How to Read New York unveils the boundless diversity of Gotham's architectural wonders. Covering every era of New York architecture-from what remains of the colonial days to the latest postmodern skyscraper-this unique guidebook illuminates the fascinating architectural and urban history of New York.

Organized chronologically and by architectural style, the book covers key highlights of the built environment from the Battery to Inwood. Many of the skyline's most iconic buildings are included, along with many lesser-known buildings that are architecturally interesting. Charmingly illustrated with 430 line drawings and vintage engravings that bring old New York to life, the book concludes with a map section that suggests themed walking tours.

How to Read Bridges: A Crash Course in Engineering and Architecture by Edward Denison and Ian Stewarthow to read bridges

How to Read Bridges is a visual guide to understanding and identifying architectural styles and engineering techniques of all types of bridges, from ancient Roman arch bridges and nineteenth-century truss bridges prevalent in the United States, to the latest high-design cantilever and suspension bridges of the moment.

It explores the elegant and varied ways in which engineers and architects have designed ever longer yet less heavy bridges, devising new methods of construction along the way.

Illustrated throughout with detailed line drawings and cross sections, including dramatic images of the world's iconic bridges, this charming guide still fits in a pocket or purse-perfect for anyone who likes to explore the dynamic bridges and built environment on foot.

wodehouse

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse

(1881-1975) grew up in England and came to the United States just before WWI, when he married an American.

He wrote novels, short fiction, plays, poems, musical lyrics, and articles of journalism. His works, translated into many languages, won him worldwide acclaim.

His work centers on British upper class, pre-WWI. This is the world into which he was born and educated.

Perhaps most well-known for his "Jeeves and Wooster" stories, Wodehouse wrote over 96 novels, including the "Uncle Fred" and "Blandings Castle" books.

P. G. Wodehouse is recognized as the greatest English comic writer of the twentieth century. Launched on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death, each Overlook Wodehouse is the finest edition of the master's work ever published.

Bargain Books

What Knot by Geoffrey Budworth and Richard Hopkins

what knot

When it comes to writing books about knots, Geoffrey Budworth has it all tied up! He has written over a dozen books about knots and knot-tying, and we have a bargain price of $14.99 for What Knot.

Anyone can tie knots: learn just one or two from this book and you will be glad you bought it. Learn ten, and it could make a difference in your life. This is because there is endless pleasure to be had from the study and practice of knot tying, this fundamental but fascinating process being an art, craft, science and philosophy, all rolled into one. This book contains over 150 knots and splices and is guaranteed to amuse for hours on end. It makes sense to shed our over dependence on buckles, clips and zip fasteners, safety pins and superglue, when a length of cord or rope and the right choice of knot works at least as well and often better.

Chickens by Derek Hallchickens

Are you curious about backyard-breeding? Wondering how it might be to have fresh eggs daily? Our bargain book price of $14.99 for Chickens might get you clucking with excitement!

The breeds are well presented visually, often as chicks, poults and adults. Which takes the mystery out of wondering what they should look like young or what they will look like when mature. The write ups are very helpful and go into often neglected details such as individual breed mannerisms and behavior traits. Though each chicken is individual in temperment, breeds are pre-disposed and this book reveals that expertly.
