Our next event -
Friday November 18 at 7pm
Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years
by Gregory Maguire
Please join us on Friday, November 18th at a special time, 7 pm, as we warmly welcome Gregory Maguire, reading from his latest book, Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years.
Gregory Maguire's four-volume Wicked Series began in 1995 with the publication of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which was adapted into one of the most successful Broadway musicals in history. That first novel in the series was followed by the hugely successful novels Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men.
With Out of Oz, Maguire brings the world of Oz full circle, as he once again takes readers back to the marvelous land, where the Emerald City is mounting an invasion of Munchkinland, Glinda is held under house arrest, and the Cowardly Lion is on the run from the law. And Dorothy Gale finds that she's definitely not in Kansas anymore. Amidst the chaos, Elphaba's granddaughter, Rain, comes of age to take up her broom in an Oz wracked by war.
Local author Gregory Maguire received his Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Tufts University. Also the author of several books for children, his work as a consultant in creative writing for children has taken him to speaking engagements across the United States and abroad. He is a founder and director emeritus of Children's Literature New England, a non-profit educational charity established in 1987.

Personal connections from award-winning photographer
Pilgrimage by Annie Leibovitz;
introduction by Doris Kearns Goodwin

"Gazing at the traces left behind by her favorite artists, traces of their lives, their creature habits, Ms. Leibovitz finds something to nurture all of us - something about integrity, staying true to a vision. She forges a connection to the past that informs the way she is moving forward." --Dominique Browning
The New York Times
Pilgrimage took Annie Leibovitz to places that she could explore with no agenda; she chose the subjects simply because they meant something to her. The first place was Emily Dickinson's house in Amherst; a few months later, she went with her three young children to Niagara Falls. She added the houses of Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin in the English countryside and Sigmund Freud's final home, in London, but most of the places on the lists were American.
The work became more ambitious as Leibovitz discovered that she wanted to photograph objects as well as rooms and landscapes. She began to use more sophisticated cameras and a tripod and to travel with an assistant, but the project remained personal.
Leibovitz came to Concord to photograph the site of Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond. Once she got there, she was drawn into the wider world of the Concord writers. Ralph Waldo Emerson's home and Orchard House became subjects. The Massachusetts studio of the Beaux Arts sculptor Daniel Chester French became the touchstone for trips to Gettysburg and to the archives where the glass negatives of Lincoln's portraits have been saved.
Pilgrimage was a restorative project for Leibovitz, and the arc of the narrative is her own. "From the beginning, when I was watching my children stand mesmerized over Niagara Falls, it was an exercise in renewal," she says. "It taught me to see again."
With an Introduction by Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pilgrimage is a beautiful book for those who appreciate photography, literature, or history, or those wishing to contemplate their own personal pilgrimage.

New in our signed books gallery
Then Again by Diane Keaton

Then Again is Diane Keaton's unforgettable memoir about her mother and herself. In it you will meet the woman known to tens of millions as Annie Hall, but you will also meet, and fall in love with, her mother, the loving, complicated, always-thinking Dorothy Hall. To write about herself, Diane realized she had to write about her mother, too, and how their bond came to define both their lives. In a remarkable act of creation, Diane not only reveals herself to us, she also lets us meet in intimate detail her mother. Over the course of her life, Dorothy kept eighty-five journals - literally thousands of pages-in which she wrote about her marriage, her children, and, most probingly, herself. Dorothy also recorded memorable stories about Diane's grandparents. Diane Keaton has sorted through these pages to paint an unflinching portrait of her mother - a woman restless with intellectual and creative energy, struggling to find an outlet for her talents - as well as her entire family, recounting a story that spans four generations and nearly a hundred years. More than the autobiography of a legendary actress, Then Again is a book about a very American family with very American dreams. Diane will remind you of yourself, and her bonds with her family will remind you of your own relationships with those you love the most.
We have signed editions of Then Again on our shelves!
