Greetings!
This week's book picks include signed editions of new fiction called "one of the most original, audacious, and terrifying novels in years." We're also highlighting a contemporary spin on a classic Jane Austen novel.
When you reach the bottom of this newsletter, you'll find this week's "hot pick" from our bargain book tables. Our rolling "Sidewalk Sale" book cart remains out front in good weather. And, check out the In Our Window section for information on Concord's upcoming town-wide sidewalk sales.
Our next event will be Thursday, July 14, with Jael McHenry and her novel The Kitchen Daughter. The protagonist is a sheltered 26-year-old woman who finds comfort in cooking; we'll be serving treats from Ginny's recipe box.
Following this, on Sunday, July 17, is award-winning author Dawn Tripp with her latest novel, Game of Secrets. Billed as a literary thriller, Game of Secrets is classic New England storytelling at its best; if you enjoy an old-fashioned game of Scrabble (or a new-fangled game of Words with Friends), you'll want to come out and meet the author.
Attention moms - are you looking for a bonding and growth experience for you and your daughter? See details below for information on a Mother-Daughter Book Group workshop led by a mother-daughter pair who were part of a group that ran for six years. Attend the workshop solo, or bring your daughter to help get her involved and excited!
Other upcoming events are listed in the left sidebar of this weekly newsletter and on our Facebook page.
As always, we look forward to chatting with you in the Bookshop; tell us what you're packing in your beach bag. Comments are also welcome via email to info.concordBookshop@gmail.com.

Our Next Event: A delicious novel Thursday, July 14 at 7pm
Please join us as we welcome former Boston-area resident Jael McHenry reading from her novel, The Kitchen Daughter.
The novel is narrated by Ginny Selvaggio, a shy, sheltered young woman with Asperger's syndrome, left alone in her childhood home after the death of her parents and struggling to deal with her grief by cooking from family recipes. It is an an utterly original, page-turning debut about grief, self-discovery, and what it means to be normal.
O, the Oprah Magazine, said of the book, "While Ginny is wonderfully single-minded about cooking, her fresh, sharp story has as many layers as a good pâte á choux;" it was named a "Tantalizing Beach Read" at Oprah.com.
A Tufts University alumna and former Brighton resident who is now based in New York City, McHenry is a passionate home cook who blogs about food and cooking. Her work has appeared in publications such as the North American Review, Indiana Review, and the Graduate Review at American University, where she earned her MFA in Creative Writing.

A Book Group Favorite, now in paperback The Cookbook Collector by Allegra Goodman

"A modern take on Sense and Sensibility . . . a beautifully textured tale of two sisters that hits all the Jane Austen high notes . . . [Allegra] Goodman delicately navigates her characters' complex emotions." -- People (four stars) Emily and Jessamine Bach are opposites in every way: Twenty-eight-year-old Emily is the CEO of Veritech, twenty-three-year-old Jess is an environmental activist and graduate student in philosophy. Pragmatic Emily is making a fortune in Silicon Valley, romantic Jess works in an antiquarian bookstore. Emily is rational and driven, while Jess is dreamy and whimsical. Emily's boyfriend, Jonathan, is fantastically successful. Jess's boyfriends, not so much. National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Allegra Goodman has written a delicious novel about appetite, temptation, and holding on to what is real in a virtual world: love that stays. |

New Fiction - signed editions! The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan

"Yes, there are vampires here . . . But don't give this book to Twilight groupies; the frank tone, dark wit, and elegant, sophisticated language will likely do them in. . . . smart, original, and completely absorbing. Highly recommended." - Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal (Starred review)
We have signed editions of "one of the most original, audacious, and terrifying novels in years." Meet Jake. A bit on the elderly side (he turns 201 in March), but you'd never suspect it. Nonstop sex and exercise will do that for you-and a diet with lots of animal protein. Jake is a werewolf, and after the unfortunate and violent death of his one contemporary, he is now the last of his species. Although he is physically healthy, Jake is deeply distraught and lonely. Jake's depression has carried him to the point where he is actually contemplating suicide-even if it means terminating a legend thousands of years old. It would seem to be easy enough for him to end everything. But for very different reasons there are two dangerous groups pursuing him who will stop at nothing to keep him alive. Here is a powerful, definitive new version of the werewolf legend-mesmerising and incredibly sexy. In Jake, Glen Duncan has given us a werewolf for the twenty-first century-a man whose deeds can only be described as monstrous but who is in some magical way deeply human. London-based author Glen Duncan has written seven previous novels. He was chosen by both Arena and The Times Literary Supplement as one of Britain's best young novelists. |

New in our Signed Books Gallery The Quotable Thoreau by Jeffrey S. Cramer
What a lovely afternoon with Jeffrey S. Cramer and a room full of people eager to learn more about Thoreau, and to hear some of his writing.
Mr. Cramer explained that Thoreau was a man of contradictions - a vegetarian who ate meat, a loner who loved to engage in conversation.
Jeffrey S. Cramer is curator of collections at the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods.
In addition to signing additional copies of The Quotable Thoreau for our shelves, he was kind to sign some of his other books, including Walden: A Fully Annotated Edition.
These books are available in our shop - as one audience member commented, The Quotable Thoreau is an excellent "hostess gift" for out-of-town friends; bring a little bit of Concord to them.

Upcoming workshop: How to have years of fun with a mother-daughter book group Sunday, July 24 at 3pm | | Lori Day |
Did you read this article in last week's Concord Journal, about mother-daughter book groups?
Not only are these groups a fantastic way to explore literature together, but also to see each other in context of other mothers and daughters.
Join Lori Day and her daughter Charlotte Kugler as they discuss how they formed a mother-daughter book group when Charlotte was in third grade, and how it was able to run successfully for six years. They formed lasting friendships, strengthened their own bonds, and discussed books that ranged from childhood classics to popular series.
