Greetings!

The countdown is on!  As we approach the end of 2010, we reflect on a number of milestones this past year:  Concord commemorated 375 years since its incorporation in 1635; the Concord Bookshop, founded in 1940, had its platinum anniversary; and we celebrate with our Bookshop manager, John Netzer, his 40 years in the book business (that's the Ruby anniversary, for those who enjoy trivia)!

Keep an eye on this space in the next few weeks, as we announce new programs in the Bookshop, including invitations to a bookgroup advisory panel, an in-store discussion group, and a writing workshop.

This week's newsletter highlights an addition to our signed books gallery.  Ann Boyajian, illustrator of Careers for Your Cat, not only signed books, but added a hand-drawn feline friend with purrsonality to the opening pages.

We feature two gorgeous design and architecture books - both filled with photographs peeking into the living spaces of iconic home design.  Our children's pick shares a calming message of the season, no matter how you celebrate.

Many thanks to all who have donated to the Concord Prison Outreach Children's Book Drive.  The bin will remain in the Bookshop until the end the month, for new children's books - teens to tots.

Our gift wrap table will be staffed on Saturday, December 18 by volunteers from Gaining Ground.  See details below to learn how your contribution will help others in the community.

Please remember that we've extended hours for your convenience during this busy season.  We'll be open weekends until 6:00pm, and Thursdays until 8:00pm.

As we do each week, we encourage you to share this newsletter with a friend.

Stop in and talk with us about what you'd like to read next!  What are you reading now?  What's your book group reading?  Comments are also welcome via email to info.concordBookshop@gmail.com.

"Grace and style inside and out"
Nice House by Samuel G. White
nice house

Nice House will suit the reader looking for a lovely coffee table book, a dreamer capturing fantasies of his ideal home, or a serious planner looking for inspiration for renovation or decorating ideas.

"The locations are diverse - New England, Long Island, Pennsylvania, California - and the architecture encompasses both traditional and contemporary vocabulary. What links them is their livable scale and the architect's commitment to creating congenial spaces with a handsome and functional design.

These houses display grace and style inside and out. They invite a full range of activities from  formal to informal, from celebration to repose, from a solitary existence to a house full of children or guests. These houses have good places to read a book or write a letter, to take a nap, and to cook and eat with family and friends."

Author Samuel G. White is a partner in the New York firm Platt Byard Dovell White Architects. He is the author of three previous books on the work of McKim, Mead & White.

"Exemplary studies of domestic modernism at its warmest and most creative"
Handcrafted Modern by Leslie Williamson
  handcraftd modern

An intimate and revealing collection of photographs of astonishingly beautiful, iconic, and undiscovered mid-century interiors.

This collection of newly commissioned photographs presents the most compelling homes by influential mid-century designers, such as Russel Wright, George Nakashima, Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eva Zeisel, among others.

Intimate as well as revelatory, Williamson's photographs show these creative homes as they were lived in by their designers, including such significant homes as:

  • Walter Gropius's historic Bauhaus home in Massachusetts
  • Albert Frey's floating modernist aerie on a Palm Springs rock outcropping
  • Wharton Esherick's completely handmade Pennsylvania house, from the organic handcarved staircase to the iconic furniture

Author Leslie Williamson is a photographer based in San Francisco. Her work has appeared in Dwell, Surface, and Travel + Leisure magazines.

Children's holiday pick
Llama Llama Holiday Drama by Anna Dewdney

llama llama holiday drama

Llama Llama holidays.

Jingle music. Lights ablaze.

How long till that special date?

Llama Llama has to wait.

Fans of Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama books will welcome this story of the little llama's reaction to the busyness of the season.

Told in rhyme, and accompanied by Dewdney's full-page watercolor illustrations, Llama Llama struggles to be patient while shopping, baking, and decorating.  The anticipation culminates in a meltdown, followed by a reassuring hug and snuggle with Mama Llama.

Recommended as a holiday pick for ages 3 to 103; a reminder that the true gift of the season is spending time together.

At Our Gift Wrap Table

"Growing Food. Growing Community" gaining ground

Volunteers from Gaining Ground will be at the Concord Bookshop on Saturday, December 18, providing complimentary gift wrapping services and information about the non-profit organization.

Gaining Ground was founded over 15 years ago, and now maintains two gardens - a 9-acre parcel at the historic Thoreau Birthplace property, and a 1/2-acre reproduction kitchen garden at the Old Manse.

All fruit and vegetables from the gardens are donated to shelters, food pantries, and meal programs throughout Greater Boston and eastern Massachusetts. Guided by a professional farm crew, volunteers perform an astounding 70% of the work in the gardens.

Any donations received by the volunteers at the gift wrapping station on Saturday will be used to further Gaining Ground's efforts at area hunger relief; it is a 501 ( c) (3) non-profit organization.

For more information about the programs, please visit the Gaining Ground website.
