Greetings!

Were you in the throngs on Main Street on Sunday when the parade marched toward Monument Square and Santa lit the holiday tree? We enjoyed peeking out the bookshop windows at the revelry and hearing the sighs of happiness as people came in from the cold to our warm shop full of books!

Many thanks to all who warmed up, purchased books, and enjoyed our free gift wrapping services.  Volunteers staffed the table on Sunday afternoon and your contributions allowed them to purchase a dozen books for the Concord Prison Outreach Children's Book Drive.  The bin will remain in the Bookshop until the end the month, for new children's books - teens to tots.

Our gift wrap table will be staffed on Sunday, December 12 by volunteers from Open Table.  See details below to learn how your contribution will help others in the community.

The Concord Chamber of Commerce has organized a Holiday Shopping Night, this Thursday from 5:00pm - 8:00pm.  Entertainment includes strolling carolers with the Tom Ruggles Quartet and The Sounds of Concord.  We hope to see you then!

Speaking of evening events, please note that we've extended hours for your convenience during this busy season.  We'll be open weekends until 6:00pm, and Thursdays until 8:00pm.

This week's newsletter features a collection of Rumpole stories from John Mortimer, a humorous book about cats with aptitude (and attitude!), a great collector item for Doonesbury fans, and the hottest new novel for young adults.

Speaking of hot, as this newsletter goes to press, we are unpacking a new shipment of the Autobiography of Mark Twain: The Complete and Authoritative Edition.

We have signed books from Christopher Bing, including a Caldecott Honor recipient!

As we do each week, we encourage you to share this newsletter with a friend.

Stop in and talk with us about what you'd like to read next!  What are you reading now?  What's your book group reading?  Comments are also welcome via email to info.concordBookshop@gmail.com.

Short story collection
A Rumpole Christmas by John Mortimer
rumpole christmas

Of the late Sir John Mortimer's many beloved characters, it is widely agreed that Horace Rumpole was his greatest fictional creation. Here, collected in book form for the first time, are five delightful tales that capture the beleagured barrister at his grumpy, yet warm-hearted best.

Rumpole isn't particularly fond of Christmas Day - he finds it has a horrible habit of dragging on as She Who Must Be Obeyed leads him through the usual rituals. But at least the criminal fraternity rarely takes a holiday. Whether it's a suspicious Father Christmas, or an unseasonably nasty murder trial, there's always something wonderfully unlawful to liven up Rumpole's dull holiday plans.

Author John Mortimer was born in 1923, and wrote over fifty books, plays, and scripts (including the script to Tea with Mussolini and consulting on the TV show Boston Legal), in addition to work as a barrister.  The Horace Rumpole character was originally conceived for a BBC series.  Mortimer was knighted in 1998, and died in 2009.

For the Collector
40: A Doonesbury Retrospective by G. B. Trudeau

doonesbury
Doonesbury hits the Big 4-0 in a big way.  Literally.  This retrospective is large in physical size and artistic scope, with 18 essays by Gary Trudeau, 1800 strips reproduced, and a multi-page foldout.  A treasure for the collector, and an impressive gift.

"On October 26, 1970, college jock B.D. met his inept and geeky roommate, Mike. Fourteen thousand strips later, the world of Doonesbury has grown uniquely vast, sustained by an intricately woven web of relationships - over 40 major characters spanning three generations. This book opens with an in-depth essay in which G. B. Trudeau surveys his sprawling creation as only he could. The volume's 1,800 beautifully displayed strips chronicle the key adventures and path crossings of the ever-evolving cast, from ur-characters such as Zonker, Joanie, Duke, and Honey, to relative newcomers such as Zipper, Alex, and Toggle. Dropped in throughout are 18 detailed essays in which Trudeau contemplates individual characters and groups of characters.

The book's literal centerpiece is a four-page foldout that maps in annotated detail the mind-boggling matrix of relationships. A feast of storytelling and a clarifying overview, 40: A Doonesbury Retrospective offers a unique way to experience one of the greatest comic strips ever."

Matched by Ally Condie

"Condie's enthralling and twisty dystopian plot is well served by her intriguing characters and fine writing." -Publishers Weekly, starred review
Matched

"Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow."

For an interesting video teaser, showing what Cassia saw on the screen, watch this short book trailer for Matched.
