Leslie Perrin Wilson reads from and discusses Historic Concord and the Lexington Fight

Greetings!

Wishing a very Happy Thanksgiving to you!  May your holiday be filled with good friends, good food, and - of course - good books!

This week's newsletter offers suggestions for a new book about the history of ballet, Ina Garten's latest book of quick and delicious recipes, a glorious children's book, and the ultimate gift for Stieg Larsson fans.

A few of our upcoming special events include Leslie Perrin Wilson with her 375th anniversary edition of the history of Concord, and the Holiday Shopping Night sponsored by the Concord Chamber of Commerce.  See details below and in our window.

If you're in town shopping this weekend, note our extended hours - now open until 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, through the holidays.

When you're in the bookshop, we ask that you might consider donating a children's book to the Concord Prison Outreach, which furnishes books that fathers can read to their children during a family visit. There is a box for donated books here at the Concord Bookshop.

Did you know that we carry audiobook editions of many children and adult titles?  If you're heading 'over the river and through the woods' during the holidays, a book on CD might be one way to keep peace in the car!  They're sized perfectly for stocking stuffers.

As we do each week, we encourage you to share this newsletter with a friend; signing up for our mailing list is as easy as clicking the "Join" button to the left.  We've added Facebook event pages for upcoming events; we hope you take advantage of this social media to invite friends to join you at the bookshop.

Stop in and talk with us about what you'd like to read next!  Comments are also welcome via email to info.concordBookshop@gmail.com.

Leslie Perrin Wilson earned her B.A. in Latin from Wellesley College, her M.S. from the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and her M.A. in English from Simmons College. She has made her career in special collections and archives and has been Curator of Special Collections of the Concord (Massachusetts) Free Public Library since 1996.

New Nonfiction
Apollo's Angels by by Jennifer Homans
  Apollos Angels

For more than four hundred years, the art of ballet has stood at the center of Western civilization. Its traditions serve as a record of our past. Ballet has been shaped by the Renaissance and Classicism, the Enlightenment and Romanticism, Bolshevism, Modernism, and the Cold War.

Apollo's Angels is the first cultural history of ballet ever written, lavishly illustrated and beautifully told.

Ballet is unique: It has no written texts or standardized notation. It is a storytelling art passed on from teacher to student. The steps are never just the steps - they are a living, breathing document of a culture and a tradition. And while ballet's language is shared by dancers everywhere, its artists have developed distinct national styles, often formed in response to political and societal upheavals.

Author Jennifer Homans is a historian and critic who was also a professional dancer: She brings to Apollo's Angels a knowledge of dance born of dedicated practice. She traces the evolution of technique, choreography, and performance in clean, clear prose, drawing readers into the intricacies of the art with vivid descriptions of dances and the artists who made them.

Filled with 225 gorgeous full-color photographs, Barefoot Contessa How Easy is That? is the perfect kitchen companion for busy home cooks who still want fabulous flavor.

Children's Pick of the Week
Of Thee I Sing written by Barack Obama; illustrated by Loren Long

Of Thee I Sing

President Barack Obama has written a moving tribute to thirteen groundbreaking Americans and the ideals that have shaped our nation. From the artistry of Georgia O'Keeffe, to the courage of Jackie Robinson, to the patriotism of George Washington, President Obama sees the traits of these heroes within his own children, and within all of America's children.

Breathtaking, evocative illustrations by award-winning artist Loren Long at once capture the personalities and achievements of these great Americans and the innocence and promise of childhood.

This beautiful book celebrates the characteristics that unite all Americans, from our nation's founders to generations to come. It is about the potential within each of us to pursue our dreams and forge our own paths. It is a treasure to cherish with your family forever.
