As the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games draw close, we can't help but reflect on and celebrate sport and its role within our communities. The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics was an unparalleled success for our athletes at a Winter Games and ignited Canadian pride across the country with countless memorable finishes to celebrate. For 17 days, Canadians from all walks united as one, for a common purpose - to celebrate sport in our country on the world stage and our athletes inspired a nation to believe in all possibilities. We witnessed courage and dedication combined with thousands of hours of training come to fruition when figure skater Joannie Rochette gave the performance of a lifetime when struck with heartbreaking tragedy just days before her performance. National Sport School
| |

In 1994, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the Calgary Olympic Development Association (CODA), now Winsport, initiated the National Sport School (NSS) to address the high dropout rate of developing athletes.
Through personal learning plans, distance learning, and teacher advisory programs, the NSS developed a program that catered to the personal needs of athletes and that fit into the overall alternative education delivery methods implemented by the government of the Province of Alberta.
Since inception, the NSS has had many successes, both athletically and academically. Students boast a 100% graduation rate and 100% of students pass the diploma exams with many achieving levels of excellence. Athletically, a staggering 10% of Canadian Team Members at Vancouver and Torino Olympic Games were current or past students; these students travel the world as ambassadors of Alberta.
