What is ISO/IEC
17025?
|
|
ISO/IEC 17025 is an International Standard that specifies the requirements for the competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations. A laboratory must document a quality management system that essentially fulfils the requirements of ISO 9001 as determined in ISO/IEC 17025. The implementation of a documented management system within the laboratory is an integral and essential component of the laboratory's application for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
In addition, ISO/IEC 17025 requires that the laboratory must understand and demonstrate technical competency for the testing and calibration services. The implementation period requires several months - establishing the measurement uncertainty and traceability to the appropriate National and International Standards. An accreditation organisation finally carries out the ISO/IEC 17025 assessment on-site.

The Palette
Volume 1, 2011
|
Dear ,
Welcome to the first edition of The Palette for 2011.
Having been at the company for 12 months now, I continue to be astounded at where and how colour measurement is being used. This last year, I have seen requests from Agricultural Owners in the USA to Sesame Oil Suppliers in Asia. Applications as varied as Beehive Owners on the Arctic Circle to Gourmet Chestnut growers in the Pacific Rim! And the list continues. If you have an interesting application on the use of colour measurement, please do let me know. I would love to cover it.
Well, this year has already been busy with attendance at exhibitions, the introduction of the NC45 spectrophotometer and some exciting news regarding the ISO/IEC 17027 accreditations.
All this and more is covered in this e-letter. If you would like to see further specific articles during the year, please do not hesitate to suggest topics. The Editor

New ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation - Gardner and Platinum-Cobalt Scales
Lovibond Tintometer has recently been awarded two new ISO/IEC 17025 accreditations. This extends the company's unique position with accreditation now formally including the Gardner Colour Scale and the Platinum-Cobalt Colour Scale.
With ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, customers can be confident that the Lovibond range of instruments, liquid reference standards and glass reference standards enable them to ensure conformance with these internationally accepted colour scales. Guaranteed conformance with standards is critical to the success of any business.
Both the Platinum-Cobalt Colour and Gardner Colour scales are commonly utilised across a wide range of industries, often in conjunction. The lower resolution of the Gardner Scale is ideal for use in the petrochemical and paints and varnishes industries. It is complemented by the Platinum Cobalt Scale when higher resolution is required or very lightly coloured liquids are being analysed such as in the Environmental Water industry.
Detailed descriptions of both scales can be found in the Scales section of the Lovibond website.

The Food Industry
The Lovibond team has recently retuned from the Food and Beverage Test Exposition in Cologne. While there, they gathered some interesting insight into how colour measurement is contributing to the quality analysis of food and drinks. There is undoubtedly a growing awareness of the need for quality control in food manufacturing. Historically, manufacturers have been reluctant to apply standards other than those dictated by health and safety legislation. This attitude is finally changing. Food manufacturers are increasingly taking on-board technologies long accepted in other industries. Technologies that allow greater control and measurement of texture, size, taste, viscosity and, most importantly, colour. The exhibition was well attended by many key companies looking to take advantage of this underdeveloped market for physical testing of foods. Campden BRI, Brookfield, Dupont, Instrom, Intertek, Lloyd Instruments, PerkinElmer and Merck, to name but a few, were all in attendance. The rewards are there for those early adoptors willing to apply state of the art technology to their production and development processes. |
