Miscommunication of Colour Data
A common mistake in industry is the miscommunication of colour data. Individuals in a supply chain think they are talking in the same "colour language" but, in fact, are not.
For example: Delta E values can be calculated for CIE L*a*b*, Hunter LAB, CIE L*c*h, CMC and CIE 94.
It is rather like an architect talking Metres, whilst the builder thinks the unit of measurement is Feet or Yards. Result? Disaster.
The following simple steps should minimise the chance of monumental miscommunication:
- State 'illuminant' or 'illuminants' (primary, secondary or tertiary) used (eg. D65, A, CWF) - State 'degree observer' (2 degrees or 10 degrees)
- State 'colour equation used' (eg. CIE L*a*b*, Hunter LAB, CIE L*c*h, CMC or CIE94)
- State model and manufacturer of instrument used
- State 'tolerances', if applicable As with any scientific instrument, you should always ensure that your spectrophotometer has a valid calibration certificate. |
Don't forget we are offering all readers a free invitation to Brau Bevial which will take place in Nuernberg, Germany, from the 10-12th November. If you haven't contacted us yet but would still like to visit, please let us know. We do still have a few tickets left.
We look forward to seeing you there - Hall 4, Booth 216.

Institute of Science and Technology
A Tribute to Lovibond's Contribution to Colour Science
Mr Alan Gall, IST Archivist, provides an excellent insight to the advanced research carried out by Lovibond and his theories on the relationship between light and colour. The article overviews the Perception of Colour and Lovibond's initial findings to develop an accurate method for measuring the colour of beer. Alan also looks at some of the earlier instruments developed as a result of this research. Much has changed at Lovibond Tintometer since those days but the company is still proud of its founder and takes pride in continuing to drive his ambitions in the Science of Colour.
