The CAM-System 550 presents a new approach to quantifying colour and appearance. Based on digital imaging technology, it is an innovative QC inspection system that allows the user to decide quickly and objectively whether a product meets acceptable colour and appearance criteria or if it has undesirable defects.
The CAM-System 550 is particularly well suited to measuring products with non-uniform or variable colour properties, such as biscuits and sweets, which cannot be measured easily with conventional colorimetric spectrophotometers. |

"Confidence in results": deciding factor at Everards Brewery
Quality Control at Everards Brewery is paramount both for the ales they brew in Leicestershire and for the incoming qualification of 3rd party beer served by their extensive list of public houses. The lab manager, Ms Christine Gleadow, has over 20 years' experience in the brewing industry and knows a thing or two about ale.
When Everards' colourimeter recently showed signs of unreliability, the proposed cost of service and repair resulted in the company considering alternatives. They selected the portable EBC Colour Pod for use in situ and the PFX-195/4 for use in the laboratory. "The EBC Colour Pod is so easy-to-use yet so accurate," explains Gleadow. "It is definitely our instrument of choice for the testing of light lagers during the brewing process. The robustness of the PFX-195/4 makes it ideal for the master unit in the lab. The products complement each other perfectly." Quality control is an important part of any process but even more so in the beverage industry where consumers judge what they drink not only on the taste but also the aesthetic appearance of the beer. Confidence in results gives reassurance for every delivery.

Taking the Measurement
One of the most common causes for irregular or inaccurate readings in colour measurement is the result of not preparing the instrument and article for measurement correctly. Here are some tips from our Technical Department on how to make sure each reading is correct every time when measuring Transmittance products:
Always:
Check the cleanliness of the instrument and sample chamber
Follow the measurement method
Ensure the correct operation parameters are chosen
Use the correct path length cell
Use comparable cells when comparing two instruments
Keep the outside of the cell windows as clean as the inside of the cell
Baseline the instrument against the correct reference (air, deionised water, blank solution, etc)
Ensure the sample is not turbid and does not contain particulate matter
Should samples require heating, be sure they are in an indentical state
Measure the Certified standard supplied with the instrument
Check when the instrument was last serviced / calibrated Never: Handle cell by the windows
In the next edition, we'll provide advice on measuring Reflectance products. |
New RT Benchtop Stand
The RT300,-400,-500 Series of Portable Reflectance Spectro-photometers are now being shipped with new, enhanced viewing stands.
The functionality remains the same with the additional benefits:
1) the sample arm is damped, avoiding the possibility of samples being damaged by the spring loaded arm of the old model 2) the stand can be clamped/screwed to benches to make it much more stable 3) adjustable sample shelf making positioning of samples such as cuvettes easier and faster
