Voted Best Afternoon Tea - Phoenix Magazine Best of the Valley

A Note from Jo

June is a VERY BIG month for Britain!

It is sooo exciting to see and hear all the plans at home for both the Jubilee and the Olympics. This month's newsletter is about all things British, no apologies given!

As you will all know by now, our Queen celebrates 60 years as Queen of England and the first weekend in June marks that monumental occasion. But, did you also know...a Diamond Jubilee is a celebration held to mark a 75th anniversary, but only the 60th anniversary in the case of a monarch (the length of time a monarch has reigned). Traditionally, the diamond jubilee or anniversary of a person was also on the 75th anniversary. This changed with the diamond jubilee of the British Queen Victoria's reign.

There was considerable national unrest when Queen Victoria largely withdrew from public life after her husband's death in 1861. It was decided to bring the diamond jubilee forward to the 60th anniversary in 1897. The diamond jubilee has been held on the 60th anniversary ever since.

In the preparations for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, there are echoes of the past. Over a long weekend, Britain will once more witness a large ceremony. The Diamond Jubilee Pageant will involve the river Thames with a large number of boats and sumptuously decorated Royal Barges, all the while family, friends and neighbors will be encouraged to join together in Big Jubilee Street Parties. And, just as they did in 1897, various fires will be lit (beacons), shining their lights around all the British Isles. It all sounds thrilling!

Here at the Tea Room we have a special weekend planned, and some special guests too arriving all the
way from Blighty, so make sure you make a reservation to celebrate the occasion with us.

God save the Queen.

STREET PARTIES

As part of the celebrations in England, every street that is able to will hold a street party. An occasion when all the residents drag out the dining room table, throw on a white tablecloth and share sandwiches, jelly and ice cream and Victoria Sponge cake with their neighbors.

The last one I attended was 35 years ago when the Queen had her Silver Jubilee, (25 years on the throne). We all had to 'dress up' in costume. I went as a Turkish Harem girl (save the comments please), my sister went as Nine Carrot Gold, complete with nine of said vegetable strung around her waist, and my little brother who was only about 3 yrs old at the time came as Charlie Chaplin with a black kohl moustache that refused to stay put on a runny-nosed toddler.

We all played games in the street as it was closed to the traffic. The Egg and Spoon Race...run like mad with a real egg balanced on a spoon. The Wheelbarrow Race...get your best friend to hold your legs while you 'walk' as fast as you can on your hands. The Three-Legged Race...grab your best friend and tie your left leg and her right leg together, then run like mad for the finish line. Not exactly Olympian material, but jolly good wholesome fun!

Then there were the Mums and Dads races when we would all laugh at our parents as they raced each other down the street. Aah, those salad days before computers kept us all indoors.

The best part about the street party was the bunting. Miles of Union Jack pennants strung about the lampposts to create such a patriotic feel. I have already had my bunting sent from England so we can recreate my memories at the Tea Room.

Recipes to try in preparation for the Diamond Jubilee

CORONATION CHICKEN
A creamy chicken and mango dish with a spicy curried mayonnaise dressing, is something fresh and different that always brings interest and recipe requests. Served cold with a crisp garden or rice salad. This also makes a wonderful sandwich filling.

* 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
* 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper
* 3/4 cup toasted cashews

Directions
1. In a large pot, cook chicken in lightly salted boiling water for 20 minutes. Drain, cool, and cut into 1/2-inch strips.

2. In a large bowl, stir together chicken strips, raisins, and half of the mango.

3. In a medium bowl, mix together mayonnaise, curry powder, chutney, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper, then toss gently with chicken mixture. Stir in half the nuts. Transfer to a platter, and garnish with remaining mango strips and cashews.

CHERRIES JUBILEE

2. Remove the cherries from the heat, and stir in the cherry extract. Pour in the brandy, and ignite with a long lighter. Gently shake the pan until the blue flame has extinguished itself. Spoon the cherries over the bowls of ice cream.

THE OLYMPICS COME TO BRITAIN

Paralympian Tom Aggar

I hope you enjoy this recent article about my cousin Tom Aggar who will be competing for Gold in this year's Paralympic Games in August. He won the Gold Medal in Beijing at the last Olympics!

Tom Aggar: I'm In Medal Form
By Giles Broadbent, April 26, 2012

Paralympic rower Tom Aggar says he's feeling fitter and stronger than ever before and is "training to win gold."

The reigning Paralympic and World Champion in the single sculls said: "I'm not expecting it to be easy. People will think they can beat me and I've just got to make sure that they don't."

The engaging 27-year-old is one of the Paralympics' brightest hopes for a gold medal and he's working hard to ensure he doesn't let down the legion of friends and family who will be in Eton Dorney in late August to cheer him on.

As for the whole Olympic bandwagon itself he said, "I think it'll be great to have support from the British public and friends and family. That will be completely different to Beijing where it was just my Mum and Dad.

"Right now you get the sense that something big is looming. You have competitions to concentrate on in the months in between but now the Games is here you have to make every day count."

Go for Gold Tom!

PS: Did you also know that the Director of Food and Nutrition for the US Olympic team came to the Tea Room last year, and pronounced our quiche the best she had ever had! She was on a mission to discover how to put on Afternoon Tea for the team when they are at the Olympic Village. She came to the best place!
