New Year's Greetings from Jo and the Girls

Welcome to the first newsletter for 2012!

"Happy New Year" to all my lovely Tea Room readers. We are currently mailing this newsletter to over 1,200 tea enthusiasts!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and perhaps, like me, you are now looking at that space where the Christmas tree was and wondering what to buy to fill in the gap. Isn't it strange how empty the house looks after everything is put away? Amazing too, just how many weeks after Christmas, glitter will still stick to the carpet, the furniture and the TV screen.

I don't make New Year resolutions. Like most people, I forget immediately what they are. However, I am happy to say I have done a few 'virtuous' New-Yeary-type-chores at home:

1. All the dogs finally got the haircut and bath I had been promising them since Labor Day.

2. I finally went through my closet and donated a whole truck load of clothing to good causes.

3. I cleaned out the fridge from the detritus of too many leftovers. Mmm, didn't realize there was quite so much blue cheese in there.

And so now, to planning the New Year at the Tea Room. Onwards and upwards as we anticipate spring, my most favorite season in the desert. We have some really exciting events planned for the Tea Room this year.

Make sure you take note of the special guest who is coming on February 5th. If you are a Jane Austen fan you will definitely want to be there!

Enjoy this month's newsletter and remember to pull out your calendar and mark down when you plan to visit us. We'll be waiting.

See you in for a cuppa!

Tea Room to Host Literary Tea

Jane Austen's

Pride and Prejudice Sequel
Sunday, February 5
Admission
$45

Includes author meet and greet, inscribed book, tea, scones and cucumber sandwiches. Unfortunately, it DOES NOT include a personal audience with Mr. Darcy.

Jane Austen fans are invited to spend an afternoon at the English Rose Tea Room to meet Ava Farmer, author of the book, Second Impressions, which tells the tale of "what might have been," had Austen lived long enough to write her own sequel to Pride and Prejudice.

Tea, scones and cucumber sandwiches will be served and guests are invited to dress in clothing from the era.  Seating is limited. Tickets are $45 and must be purchased in advance by calling 480-488-4812. All attendees will receive a signed copy of the book.

Second Impressions is a historically and socially accurate account of the Darcy family, set ten years after Pride and Prejudice ends.  Written in the idiom of Austen's time by Farmer, a fictional nom de plume, the novel explores changes in the lives of the story's heroes and heroines in post-Napoleon and late Regency Europe.

Published by Chawton House Press, the book draws history from the novels, maps and other volumes that comprise the Chawton Home Library at the Center for the Study of Early English Women's Writing at Chawton, Hampshire, England.

Ava Farmer is the fictitious nom de plume of Sandy Lerner of Upperville, Virginia. Lerner was a founder of Cisco Systems. She also founded Urban Decay, a grunge cosmetics company. Lerner now spends her time running her farm, farm stores and tavern and carrying on the legacy of Austen and her work.

Back to the Future...

The Tea Room Contributes to Historic State Centennial

Town of Carefree Time Capsule

Valentine's Day is a landmark day for Arizona. Hence, it is referred to as the Valentine State.

This year, 2012 also marks the 100th year since Arizona became recognized as a State.

On February 14, in celebration of 100 years of Statehood, the Town of Carefree will be burying a time capsule at the iconic Sundial at the Carefree Desert Gardens.

Guess who has been asked to write a letter to be buried in the capsule? Yep, yours truly!

So, I am just deciding what to write. Should I include my much revered scone recipe? Or, the secrets of making a decent cup of tea? Or, maybe just include the menu for lunch, or even a sample? The contents of the capsule will be 'dug up' 50 years from now.

Wow, just imagine the unveiling ceremony, and there buried deep inside the capsule is a fossilized scone from that olde worlde English Rose Tea Room that used to be in Carefree!  Hey, maybe the Tea Room will still be there. Now there's a thought.
