Can you really quit when you want?
It's one of the biggest problems ailing modern society: trying to reach a level of euphoria artificially. No other disease affects as many people as addiction. Before you think you're exempt from the label of addict, be honest with yourself about your own practices and substance usage. How many cups of coffee or cans of Diet Coke do you consume in a day? Is your nightly glass of wine negotiable or is it becoming a "must have?" Do you need to consume chocolate to manage your PMS? How much sugar are you eating? (if you eat processed foods, it's more than you think).
The important and most difficult thing is to realize and acknowledge an addiction; only then can steps be taken to address the issue. A good place to start is with a self-inventory
Do you have an addiction?
- Do you feel you simply don't want to stop indulging in a particular substance
sugar, caffeine, alcohol, carbs right now, although you could at any time? - Do you use your substance when you are depressed, upset or facing a challenging time?
- Are you consuming more than you used to, in order to achieve the same effects?
- Have you ever tried to stop for a week, and found yourself unable to do so?
- Do you resent others who express concern about your substance abuse?
- Do you lack self-control when it comes to using your substance?
- Do you ever lie to others about how much of your substance you're consuming?
- Do you indulge in your substance alone?
- Do you envy others who seem to be able to indulge with more control than you do?
- Do you use your substance repeatedly in order to get to sleep or to stay awake?
- Do you experience irritability, headaches or other physical symptoms when you have not consumed your substance for a while?
- Is your habit compromising your health?
No one ever sets out to become addicted. But many of us underestimate the power of an addictive substance while we overestimate our own ability to exercise self-control. Just as a habit can be acquired, so can it be broken. While this inventory is certainly not exhaustive, the truth is that if you're being honest with yourself, you already know if you have an abuse concern or are on your way to one. If you do have an issue even one that seems to be rather benign do something about it now.
Supplements can help in overcoming addictions
While space prevents a full exploration of the role of supplements in recovery, know that there are things you can do to support the journey back to balance. For example:
B-complex is calming and nourishing, these help to balance moods and diminish withdrawal symptoms. Helpful in alcohol abuse situations.
Vitamin C is a detoxifier to the blood and liver, also nourishes adrenals.
Magnesium helps stabilize blood sugar. Helps relax muscles, calms nerves.
Zinc aids in immune functioning and helps with healing.
Iron helps oxygen get to the tissues. Low iron contributes to low energy.
Chlorophyll the life substance of plants is purifying and rejuvenating.
Acidophilus rebalances the digestive tract and helps fend off "bad" yeasts and organisms.
In addition to supplements, the use of herbs specific to the addiction you are trying to overcome can be extremely beneficial. Herbs can support repair and recovery and help to diminish withdrawal symptoms. Locate an experienced herbalist to help you decide which herbs to take, in what dosage and for how long. Also consult with your primary care professional before combining herbal remedies with prescription drugs.
