Our land is more valuable than your money. It will last forever. It will not even perish by flames of fire. As long as the sun shines and the waters flow, this land will be here to give life to men and animals. We cannot sell the lives of men and animals; therefore we cannot sell this land. It was put here for us by the Great Spirit and we cannot sell it because it does not belong to us. You can count your money and burn it with the nod of a buffalo's head, but only the Great Spirit can count the grains of sand and the blades of grass of these plains. As a present to you, we will give you anything we have that you can take with you; but the land, never. A Chief of one of the Blackfeet Bands

The Chickaloon News (Patricia Wade) - I met with Mike Chmielewski to discuss

Radio Free Palmer's progress. It is coming along smashingly. In fact they have secured a nice location above Turkey Red. We will be meeting again next week for some training. Chances are I will get to have my own radio spots to share our news. I'll keep you posted...of course.

My sister, Rain Wade is amazing. She can fix just about anything, plus she has all the patience in the world and never gets mad.

I remember when we were much younger and stopped at a hardware store with mom. I was bored to tears and there the two of them were, marveling over some tools.

Rain recalled when she was about three years old and dad was building something. She was bugging him to let her help. He gave her a piece of wood, a nail and a hammer and she started pounding. Maybe that's what started her on this track. She has fixed anything in my house that needs repair. Even if she's never done the task, it doesn't stop her. She will somehow figure it out.

Just recently she decided to change the hideous 45 year old hood over my old stove. The fan didn't even work in that olive green relic. Never mind she had never done this before. I heard lots of "Aha!" from the kitchen and a loud "Yippee" when that hood was in place and working. We did our famous siwass stomp and a high five and she went on to the next project.

My sister can patch holes, install lighting fixtures, put down flooring, and probably anything else she sets her mind to. She helps me with computer problems and programs my cable TV. She thinks buying a house and fixing it up is a blast. Go figure...

My sis said she would help other people fix problem areas, or show them how to do it if that is their choice. And the best part is she won't make you feel like a stoop for not knowing things. If interested, send me an email patricia@chickaloon.org and I'll let her know.

Environmental (Jessica Winnestaffer) - The Environmental Stewardship Department is bustling with activity this summer. Throughout May and June Brian Winnestaffer coordinated culvert replacements for fish passage and utilized staff members from other programs for this: John Corey, equipment operator with the Transportation Department, and multiple laborers from the Housing and Facilities Department (most recently Robert Black and Jason Boman). Through July and August Brian, Bill Keil, and Robert Black will be working with U.S. Fish and Wildlife employees to conduct salmon habitat surveys in the Knik Watershed.

Linda Brenner and Gene Agnew have been busy with the Tene' Ninicezet Project (Trails I am Thinking About) which is funded by the Administration for Native Americans and includes local recreation area attention, local trails attention, cultural tourism planning, and ecotourism planning. One definition of ecotourism is: Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.  Gene has been using his GPS on trails in the watershed to document their locations. Michael Williams was hired as a Campground Host and Erik VanCleve was hired as an Assistant Campground Host. Michael and Erik have been spending a lot of their time cleaning up the informal campgrounds at Moose Creek, Slipper Lake, Coyote Lake, Kings River, and others.  Also they hand out garbage bags to area users and remind users to clean up their campsites when they leave.

A special thank you to all of those that participated in the Cultural Ecotourism Initial Kick-off Meetings with PROS Consulting on July 12th and 13th! Your input helped us to get off to a wonderful start in the development of our Tribal Cultural Ecotourism Guide. We will get the word out soon, on our second round of meetings that will take place in mid August. If you have particular interest or questions about this, please contact Linda Brenner at 745-0737.

Jim Shaginoff with our Renewable Energy Program has fixed the solar panel at the Ya Ne Dah Ah School and will soon fix the wind generator at the Greenhouse. Jim has a large grant proposal due in August which will be for a solar-thermal and wood-pellet boiler system.

Amelia Baker, an intern from University of California at Santa Cruz, has arrived and is learning about the Alaskan lifestyle (fishing, berry picking, etc.) and has begun helping with various tasks around our department and the Village. Amelia will be here into December.

I have been participating in a lot of meetings, writing reports and grant proposals and trying to keep up with the bustling activity in the department (and all of the related paperwork and support needed). It is exciting to see so many wonderful projects happening in our community!

Teddy Roosevelt called it the most American thing in America. Tens of thousands of people attended traveling Chautauquas in small towns across mostly- rural America to see the latest entertainment and hear the renowned speakers of the day at the turn of the last, last century.

Audiences enjoyed vaudeville, music, opera, Broadway plays, and speakers such as Mark Twain. At one point, there were hundreds of traveling Chautauquas touring the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. With the advent of radio, movies, and television the eclectic traveling shows all but died out. The New Old Time Chautauqua is still around, (has been around since 1981) and will be in Palmer for one show only. Don't miss it. Workshops are free. Admission to the knock-your-socks-off-show is $5 for children, $10 for adults and $25 for families. Advance tickets are available at Fireside Books or at the July 29 Friday Fling. Who's Serving Wood in Your Food?

http://healthfreedoms.org/2011/07/16/whos-serving-wood-in-your-food/

You've, no doubt, come across the ingredient cellulose on many packaged foods like ice cream, pizza, meat, macaroni, chips and more. Cellulose is also heavily found in fast food.Cellulose sounds like a friendly word, but it's actually processed virgin wood pulp, not actually digestible as we lack the appropriate enzymes. Like meat glue, it is another type of food filler to reduce costs, but also reduces nutrition and quality. The cellulose in these foods is the same product used in plastics, cleaners, kitty litter (for its absorbency), electrodes, break pads, glue, asphalt and much more.

Catholic Church Involved in Transnational Organized Crime

https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiDFKCpLviw8dHJnczI2NG1TdkpIMnQxLTZpVFZxMVE&hl=en_US#gid=0

Transnational organized crime is considered one of the major threats to human security, impeding the social, economic, and cultural development of societies worldwide. An alarming statistical report unveiled today by the Protect Your Children Foundation proves the Catholic Church to be one of the main international instruments of organized crimes, leading the most abominable felonies against millions of children around the world. In their worldwide investigation of crimes committed unto children by priests and nuns, the Protect Your Children was able to gather alarming evidence - and as noticeable patterns began to surface, it indicated a duty to document and distribute world alerts.

Instead of buying baby carrots, get whole organic ones, complete with the leafy greens on top. Not only can you skip the plastic bag to hold them, you can also use carrot greens the same way you'd use parsley. They add extra flavor to soups, too.
