Potawatomi people lived off the land for over 9,000 years, but you'd need someone with a doctorate in Anthropology to find traces of them. If you did the same ... today, our traces would be obvious for millions of years. Johnny Flynn, Potawatomi

The Chickaloon News (Patricia Wade) - Before computers ~ there were decks of cards. When I was little, it was Canasta. Later it was Pinochle, then Cribbage and finally Bridge. Laced into those card games was Aggravation with all of us slamming dice and yelling for our preferred roll; "duck duck duck!!" for example if we wanted a two. No one could be a poor sport at our house. We all needed thick skin.

I always thought Bridge was a game for old ladies. In fact when I moved to Seattle in 1963 I got invited to play Bridge with some women while their husbands watched a loud, boring football game. These young ladies took it so seriously and got pooched up with each other over their dumb moves and it wasn't fun at all. But somehow dad learned how to play bridge, probably from a book. So he taught all of us who wanted to learn. Bridge was played into the wee hours many a night. We thought nothing of drinking coffee all evening and smoking cigarettes while we played the game.

We all professed to be champions of Cribbage. Ski (Ivan Stickman) was as expert as the rest of us and I loved to hear his little chirping laugh. He thought he could predict the weather and we just scoffed at him. Maybe he was right, I don't recall, but we sure never took his predictions seriously.

It's odd to think that today's kids won't know that kind of world, where receiving a letter in the mail was something to be greatly anticipated, and we had to use big dictionaries and encyclopedias to look things up.

-  We had a wonderful time at Culture Camp in Tazlina. Tsin'an to Johnny Goodlataw and his family, and the cooks. Snakaey, learned to make a smokehouse, smoke fish, and can it. They also beaded, spoke their language with the elders, made a drum, and built a fish trap. The weather was nice, it rained one day. Snakaey had a wonderful time. Johnny said we should dye Josi"s son Jacob's hair black. He said "He sure knows a lot of Indian."

When Bigelow, who has spent more than 30 years teaching students to think critically about complex issues, perused the pamphlet, he was stunned by the pro-coal bias and outraged that Scholastic, a name trusted by families around the world, was peddling it to elementary school children.

http://www.naturalnews.com/032719_GM_salmon_Congress.html

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a law today that would effectively bar the FDA from approving GM salmon. This is a direct result of the rising awareness of the dangers of GMOs among American consumers, along with steady coverage of the issue by the alternative media (including NaturalNews) and the efforts of Jeffrey Smith from ResponsibleTechnology.org

Mark Ruffalo wants you to stand up against hydrofracking

http://www.grist.org/natural-gas/2011-06-09-mark-ruffalo-wants-you-to-stand-up-against-hydrofracking

"A very small percentage of the population stands to make a lot of money," he said. "They're selling this by saying that it's going to bring a huge influx of jobs. But a Cornell study showed that it kills diversification in the workplace and leaves places worse than they were before. Lots of workers come in from out of state. The businesses that profit are chain hotels, gas stations, prostitution, drug dealing, and bars. And that does not make a community. That does not make an economy."

Trends That Will Affect Your Future ... The New American Slavery

http://www.explorejournal.com/article/PIIS1550830711000437/fulltext

Our prison system is larger than the 35 largest European countries combined and it is growing at an extraordinary rate. The incarceration percentage of population in the US-753 inmates per 100,000-is five times that of the UK-itself an anomaly at 151 prisoners per 100,000. France, which is next, stands at 96, with Germany at 88. This means that 2.3 million, more than 1 in 140 Americans is in prison, and 1 in every 28 children in the US has a parent behind bars-up from one in 125 just 25 years ago.

True fact: A common ingredient in commercial breads is derived from human hair harvested in China

http://www.naturalnews.com/032718_L-cysteine_commercial_bread.html

If you read the ingredients label on a loaf of bread, you will usually find an ingredient listed there as L-cysteine. This is a non-essential amino acid added to many baked goods as a dough conditioner in order to speed industrial processing. It's usually not added directly to flour intended for home use, but you'll find it throughout commercial breads such as pizza dough, bread rolls and pastries.
