Coal-fired power is the leading source of mercury emissions in North America, which are dangerous to people, fish and wildlife. Fish may have thousands of times more mercury in their systems than is found in the surrounding water due to bioaccumulation. Wildlife species that rely on fish, such as eagles and osprey, also have high levels of mercury. Mercury is known to affect learning ability and neuro-development in children. My Aunt Shirley

When I was very young, probably seven years old, it was exciting when Aunt Shirley came to stay with us. She must have been a teenager. I guessed she had been living in Sitka at the boarding school before that time. She surely had a mind of her own and said whatever she felt like saying. She was ornery just like the rest of us. Once she was being too mouthy and dad dunked her upside down into a barrel of water, but she came out laughing. (That was before we knew about water boarding. Besides, it was a quick dunk.) Some of my fondest memories of her are when she took the time to try and curl my hair with bobby pins. I didn't realize till much later how strong and straight my hair tended to be.

Aunt Shirley at Elders Lunch

Even hairdressers today comment on it and have a difficult

Lil Aunt Shirleytime getting the ends to curl around a perm rod. So it's easy to see why Aunt Shirley would get frustrated trying to get that bobby pin to make the hair not stick out everywhere. Sometimes she would just let out a stream of cuss words that was very shocking, but funny. She had to be tough to live the life she has lived, and I'm glad she's still here, saying whatever she darn well pleases.

(Editor's note: If any of you have fond memories about our family, please feel free to send them my way. I'll be happy to edit, correct spelling, etc. Tsin'aen.)

Tribal Department of Transportation (Marilyn Staggs) - The Transportation Department met with the present Federal Highway point of contact, Dale Lewis, and he, in turn, brought two new FHWA employees to be introduced to us:  Paul Rettinger and Adam Larsen. After meeting Dale's two new coworkers, one of whom will probably replace Dale as our contact when he retires in December, they went to see our new road, All Elks Road, and returned to Anchorage for their next trip to Cordova.

At the Land Use Committee scheduled for June 7, 2011 at the Ne'iine' Hwnax (upstairs of Health Department) there will be an overview for the Transportation Department's Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). We are soliciting comments to improve and update the LRTP. If you would like to preview the present document, it is found on our www.chickaloon.org website, under the Transportation Department. If you have any specific comments you wish us to have and cannot attend the Land Use Committee meeting, please send them by e-mail to Marilyn@chickaloon.org, or to our  mailbox:  Chickaloon Village, PO Box 1105, Chickaloon, AK 99674-1105, Attention:  Transportation Department, LRTP.  Or, you could call us at (907) 745-0854. We appreciate everyone's input in updating this important document.

Have a wonderful weekend and please DRIVE SAFELY - watch out for Motorcycles on the roads!

Environmental (Brian Winnestaffer) - The upper Eska Creek fish passage restoration project is going well. We are plugging away at moving material and culverts around. Thanks to Larry Wade for coming out and helping operate a dozer for us when we were short-handed! He did an awesome job helping us put in a diversion road around our project area. We'll hopefully be sticking the new culvert in the ground around the beginning of June. There is a lot of dirt to move and little space to put it. We look forward to finishing this project and opening up many more miles of spawning and rearing habitat for salmon above this area on Eska Creek (and yes, there are salmon that come up this far).

(Jessica Winnestaffer) - Last Monday I gave a Moose Creek Fish Passage Restoration Project site tour (of Phase 2) to about 90 ninth graders from a local high school. They were on a spring field trip to learn about the region and they were very attentive and respectful during my 15-minute presentation. Then they went to the Alpine Historical Park in Sutton where teachers in the Chickaloon Village Language Program talked with them about the Tribe's history and present. I hope the students had fun and learned a lot!

Raven's People: Celebrating Alaska's Native Cultures

http://www.alaskastatefair.org/site/raven%E2%80%99s-people-celebrating-alaska%E2%80%99s-native-cultures

The Alaska State Fair has been a gathering place for all Alaskans for the past 75 years, and the Fair continues to seek ways to involve and celebrate the state's diverse people and cultures. The Fair's "Raven's People: Celebrating Alaska's Native Cultures" Program is an outreach program specifically designed to expand the scope of Alaska Native art and culture at the 2011 Fair.

The program would bring together more than 150 Alaska Native drummers, dancers, artisans, craftspeople, musicians, athletes and actors from all over the state. Possible program highlights include:

§  Traditional Alaska Native dance

§  Bead working

§  Storytelling

§  Rural artists displaying their work

§  Musicians and performers from around the state

§  Workshops and demonstrations featuring such things as the Native Youth Olympics

To bring this program to life, the Fair needs your help. The Alaska State Legislature included $150,000 in the capital budget for the program at this year's Fair. This money would be used to pay for travel, accommodations and stipends for the program participants. The fate of those funds now sits in the governor's hands.

International Complaint Filed by Chickaloon Village Traditional Council

http://news.deltanewsweb.com/news/2011/05/16/international-complaint-filed-by-chickaloon-village-traditional-council/

Chickaloon Native Village and its governing body the Chickaloon Village Traditional Council (CVTC) filed a complaint against Usibelli Coal Mine Inc. (UCM) and Electric Power Development Co., Ltd (JPower) last week with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an international multi-country organization... These guidelines cover a range of issues such as labor and human rights, bribery and corruption, environment and information disclosure, and a complaints procedure.
CVTC's complaint under the guidelines addresses Usibelli Coal Mine (UCM) activities at Wishbone Hill, ancestral lands of the Athabascan Ahtna Indigenous Peoples of Alaska. Allegations include UCM's exploratory activity late last year based on permit application information more than 20 years old, not taking into account the dramatic increases in population of the area in recent years, and that pursuant to these stale and misleading permits, UCM built a coal hauling road 100 yards from CVTC's Tribal school, Ya Ne Dah Ah School, prompting safety concerns that were also not considered.

Palmer Coal Awareness Meeting Shows Growing Concern

http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2011/05/palmer-coal-awareness-meeting-shows.html?spref=fb

Monday's public meeting in Palmer, hosted by the Mat Valley Coalition and Alaska Community Action on Toxics was mostly about health issues, which are scary enough to me. There were a lot of young couples there with their very young kids scampering around the Palmer train depot, where about 85 people listened to or participated in the events and presentations.

Canadian Researchers Obtain a Simple Cure for Cancer, but Major Pharmaceutical Corporations Aren't Interested

http://nutritiondietnews.com/canadian-researchers-obtain-a-simple-cure-for-cancer-but-major-pharmaceutical-corporations-arent-interested/853757/

Canadian scientists tested dichloroacetate (DCA) on human's cells; it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells and left the healthy cells alone. It was tested on Rats inflicted with severe tumors; their cells shrank once they were fed with water supplemented with DCA. The drug is widely available and is easy to use, so why the major drug companies aren't involved? Or the Media thinking about this find?

Study: Tylenol, acetaminophen linked to causing blood cancer

http://www.naturalnews.com/032414_acetaminophen_blood_cancer.html#ixzz1MWn8WBra

"We found that high use of acetaminophen, one of the most frequently used medications worldwide, was associated with an almost twofold increased risk of incident hematologic malignancies," said Walter, referring to non-Hodgkin lymphomas, plasma cell disorders, and myeloid neoplasms. "Acetaminophen use on the majority of the days over many years appears to be associated with this new adverse effect." The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already warns that acetaminophen is toxic to the liver, and is linked to liver failure and other serious problems (http://www.fda.gov/drugs/drugsafety...). Acetaminophen is found in many common drugs, including in Excedrin, Nyquil, and Theraflu. Previous studies have also linked acetaminophen to kidney damage, asthma, and death (http://www.naturalnews.com/acetamin...).

TSA backscatter radiation safety tests were rigged

http://www.naturalnews.com/032425_airport_scanners_radiation.html

It can now be revealed by NaturalNews that the TSA faked its safety data on its X-ray airport scanners in order to deceive the public about the safety of such devices. As evidenced by recent events in Washington, we now live in an age where the federal government simply fakes whatever documents, news or evidence it wants people to believe, then releases that information as if it were fact. This is the modus operandi of the Department of Homeland Security, which must fabricate false terror alerts to keep itself in business -- and now the TSA division has taken the fabrication of false evidence to a whole new level with its naked body scanners (see below).
