Ways to Cut your Energy Bill
By: Jim Shaginoff

I would like to thank the volunteers that helped install the wind generator last fall. Thank you to Rick Dolfi for digging the holes for the anchors and the pole.Thank you to Lukas Strickland from Smart Energy for all his help from start to finish and getting us a new controller.Thank you to Steve Ratey and Lynn Peterson for their help with the installation from start to finish.Thank you to Cak'nea  Ewan, Malachi Ewan, Jarrett Johns, Jake Younger and Phil Ling for digging the trenches for the wires.

Money Saving Energy Reduction Tips:

ü  Replace the old type light bulbs with the compact fluorescent bulbs or LEDs (light emitting diodes).

ü  Install a programmable thermostat to turn the temperature down when you don't need as much heat (for instance maybe in the middle of the night when people are sleeping or during the day when people are at work and school).

ü  Turn off the computer and monitor when not in use.

ü  Use a power strip to shut off computer, monitor and printer or you can use a 'smart power strip' which costs more but shuts off printer and whatever else you are using with your computer when you shut off your computer.

ü  When buying new appliances look for the Energy Star label.

ü  Install foam gaskets behind outlet plates and switch plates on outside walls of the house.

ü  Calk and weather-strip doors and windows that leak.

ü  Windows are one of the largest sources of heat loss in the winter due to their low insulating ability and high air-leakage rates and can be responsible for 25 to 50 percent of the energy used to heat and cool homes!  If you have to replace a window get an energy efficient window, which will save you money over the long-term. Also use insulating curtains where possible.

ü  Kitchen exhaust fan covers can keep air from leaking in when the exhaust fan is not in use.

ü  Use a clothes line instead of your dryer when possible.

We had a Grand Opening of our new kitchen, thanks to support from Mat-Su Health Foundation, Department of Energy, and Chickaloon Village Traditional Council, on March 17thAlbert Harrison gave the opening prayer and welcomed all to the new kitchen.  We had guests, Sharon Scott from Mat-Su Health Foundation, Laura Phillips, Dietician Southcentral Foundation, six guests from Eklutna Village, Elders, staff, teachers, and community members helping us celebrate.  Since it was also St. Patrick's Day , we had the traditional Irish meal with corn beef and cabbage, boiled potatoes and carrots, cornbread, miscellaneous salads, lime jello with apples, and cake celebrating March birthdays and our Grand Opening.

Lisa gave a presentation, thanking all who contributed to helping get our new kitchen for the Elder Lunch Program.  For those who have not seen our new kitchen, please stop by for Elders' Lunch which is held every Thursday at noon.  If you are an Elder, and would like a ride to lunch, please call 745-0704 for transportation.  On April 7th, we will have guest speaker, Flora Deacon, doing a presentation on "Sodium in Your Diet".  Also on the April 2lst, guest speaker, Donna Horton, Clinician from Southcentral Foundation will also be giving a presentation on health issues.

Cooking Classes have resumed at the Ya Ne Dah Ah School with students participating in helping to prepare a dish for Elders' Lunch.  The classes are held on Wednesdays, which gives the students  plenty of time to prepare a tasty dish for lunch on Thursdays.  So far, students have helped prepare a fruit salad, a hearty beef stew, lasagna, and cranberry/orange muffins.  Students are taught lessons about contamination, cleanliness, equipment and utensil (knives) safety,  stove temperatures, hand-washing procedures,  and many more useful things needed to know while working in a kitchen and around food.  The students are eager to learn, and cherish the time they have to help prepare a dish for an Elder Luncheon, not to mention the love that they sincerely put into their final product.    The classes are taught by staff from the Health and Social Service Department  with school teachers and community members assisting.

Special acknowledgements to Mat-Su Health Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, Administration on Aging, and Chickaloon Village Traditional Council for supporting the renovaitons of our new kitchen and Elders Lunch.

Wow, we were busy in February and March!

First, I would like to give a big tsin'aen (thank you) to Barbara Leppanen and Cynthia Dillion for volunteering at least 40 hours in the last few months.  Barb has been a big help in the Health and Social Services Department and Cindy was a great Teacher's Aide.  We greatly appreciate all our volunteers and I will try to publically recognize each one as they exceed the 40 hours level.

Amanda Christiansen was hired on February 23, 2011 as our Clinic Manager.  Amanda has over eight years of management and administrative experience and is a Certified Medical Assistant.  Amanda is working on re-opening our clinic as a Rural Community Health Clinic.  She is working in the C'eyiits' Hwanx (Life House/downstairs of health/government building), so stop by and say "hi".

Louis Friend was hired on March 4, 2011, as our Transit Coordinator.  Lou has been working in the transit field for over 11 years and has a real passion for sustaining and growing our current bus services.  He is working in the Naggets'i Hwnax (red fox house/green building) at our Moose Creek location, so stop by and say "hi".

On March 4, 2011, we re-hired Alan Larson, Jr. as our on-call Heavy Equipment Operator / CDL Driver to help with our road maintenance program.  He has over 12 years experience as a CDL driver and helped us on the Todd's Road project last summer.  So, when you see him driving the plow truck or the sander truck, give him a smile and wave to welcome him back to the team.

On March 11, 2011, we held a Strategic Planning Meeting that was well attended by staff members, Council members, and volunteers.  We celebrated our past successes and planned for our future.  We are looking at one-year, three-years, and five-years as windows of time to accomplish our objectives.  You will be hearing more about our strategic plan over the next couple of months as we revise and advertise it.

Dan Sullivan, Commissioner with the State of Alaska's Department of Natural Resources, came and visited us on March 14, 2011.  We went on a grand tour through the neighborhoods and our offices that surround the proposed coal mine site.  We were joined by Russ Kirkham, Ed Fogels, and Kathlene Rowell from his department and then we met with them, Castle Mountain Coalition, and Borough Assembly Member Warren Keogh to discuss our concerns with the proposed Wishbone Mine.  Big tsin'aen (thank you) to the Health and Social Services Department that provided a delicious moose stew and salmon dip for our guests.

Gerri Sumpter, Kristi Williams, and Bob Walsh from Lisa Murkowski's Office visited us on March 23, 2011.  We discussed our programs and projects in the Environmental Stewardship and Education Departments.  They were excited to see the new commercial kitchen and renovations at the Ne'iine' Hwnax (chickadee house/upstairs at health/government building).

Cynthia Dillion was hired as our temporary Teacher on March 15, 2011, while we recruit for an Education/Teaching Facilitator for the Ya Ne Dah Ah School.  Cindy has over 18 months experience as a teacher's aide and is on the Parent Committee.  She is working in the Tikaandi Hwnax (wolf house/Ya Ne Dah Ah School), so stop by and say "hi".

Enjoy the sunshine that has returned.  I always feel like I am leaving winter and entering spring whenever I drive to work in Sutton from my home in Chickaloon.  There is a big difference in how much snow is left in the two communities.
